FRISCO, Tx. – Eleventh-seeded UTEP outlasted sixth-seeded Marshall 64-56 in double overtime in first-round action at Ford Center Wednesday afternoon.
The Miners (9-21) will now face third-seeded Middle Tennessee Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT in the bracket's quarterfinals. Marshall dropped to 16-14 on the season.
UTEP was led by Jordan Alexander's 16 points, while Ariona Gill had 14 and Katarina Zec chipped in 12. Alexander also had a team-high eight rebounds as the Miners outboarded the Thundering Herd 56-39. Neidy Ocuane led the team with four assists and Alexander and Gill each notched three steals.
Marshall's Shayna Gore had a game-high 25 points, while Taylor Pearson posted her second double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Taylor Porter also found her way into double figures with 10. Gore had three assists and Kristen Mayo recorded a game-high four steals.
The Thundering Herd led by as many as 10 on a basket by Princess Clemons with 3:43 left in the third quarter. However, the Miners gradually chipped away at the margin and took their first lead on an Alexander jumper with 2:03 left in regulation.
Marshall found itself trailing by two with four seconds left but Porter drove hard to the basket with one tick left and earned a pair of free throw attempts, which she converted, to send the contest to overtime.
In the second overtime, Gore made a pair of charity tosses with 14 seconds left to put the Thundering Herd up 52-50, but UTEP responded this time with a layup by Gill as time expired to extend the contest five more minutes.
UTEP outscored the Herd 12-4 in the second overtime to pull away for the win on the strength of 3-pointers by Zec and Alexander and a two minute, 46 second Marshall scoring drought to end the game.
The Thundering Herd was dogged by a tough shooting afternoon throughout as it made just 17 of its 71 field goal attempts for a 23.9 shooting percentage. It also made just seven of 39 from deep (17.9 percent).
"Credit the Miners, they got it done," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "It was a very hard-fought game. It was very physical throughout and we just didn't have enough to get over the hump. They made a couple of big shots when they needed to. We made some big plays too, but not quite enough.
UTEP also held a commanding edge in bench points (22-3).
