Thundering Herd makes second appearance in tourney
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall's women's basketball team will take part in its third postseason tournament in the past five seasons as it has learned that it will travel to Davidson for the first round of the Women's Basketball Invitational. Gametime will be 7 p.m. Wednesday night in John M. Belk Arena.
Broadcast specifics will be announced as they become available.
The two teams have met seven times, all during the 1990s when they were members of the Southern Conference. Marshall won all seven.
The Wildcats (17-14) finished a program-best 10-6 in Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament to earn the fifth seed in the A-10 Tournament. Davidson knocked off 12th-seeded St. Bonaventure 74-49 before falling to fourth-seeded Davidson 84-67. The 17 wins are the most since the 2012-13 season when the Wildcats went 22-13 while competing in the Southern Conference.
Sophomore Sarah Donovan was named the league's Most Improved Player of the Year and earned a spot on the A-10 All-Second Team, while senior Justine Lyon was named the A-10 Sixth Woman of the Year as well as All-Third Team. Sophomore Katie Turner joined Lyon on the league's All-Third Team.
Marshall (16-14) is led by first-team All-Conference USA selection Shayna Gore, who stands second in the league in scoring at 20.2 points per contest. She is currently third in school history with 2,045 career points.
The two teams played three common opponents in Appalachian State, Clemson and Charlotte. The Herd dropped a 74-52 game at Appalachian, while the Wildcats fell 81-78 at home. Marshall lost 68-54 at Clemson, while Davidson downed the Tigers 90-80. The Thundering Herd picked up a 63-62 home win over the 49ers, but the Wildcats lost a 78-66 contest in Halton Arena.
The Thundering Herd ranked sixth nationally by increasing its league win total from three in 2017-18 to 10 this season.
Marshall participated in the 2015 WBI and won at Northern Kentucky 81-79 in the first round before getting edged at Mercer by a 73-71 score in the second.
The program then played in the 2016 WNIT, dropping a 76-68 decision at Ohio.
