Mercer earns 250th career win as head coach with 6-1 defeat of Blazers
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Head coach John Mercer became the first Marshall tennis coach to reach 250 career wins Saturday when the Thundering Herd defeated the UAB Blazers, 6-1, at the Huntington Tennis Club.
"I'm excited for our team," Mercer said. "UAB was really competitive and a good, solid team from top to bottom. It was good to see our players gain a little momentum from yesterday and play well again today."
Marshall took care of business in doubles play for the second straight match, sweeping the doubles matches against the Blazers. UAB played shorthanded in the match and forfeited the No. 3 doubles match, making the Herd's path to the doubles point simpler. Liz Stefancic and Madi Ballow clinched the doubles point with their second win of the weekend, defeating Dominika Hrabalova and Megan Bertrands, 6-1. Anna Smith and Daniela Dankanych won the remaining doubles match against Marlene Herrmann and Alex Shchipakina in a tiebreaker, 7-6.
The Herd continued its momentum into singles play, winning five of the six singles points. Matilde Mulatero earned the Herd's second point of the day with a win by forfeit, as the Blazers didn't field enough players to play a No. 6 singles match. Liz Stefancic won her second straight match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Bertrands at the No. 4 spot. Ballow clinched the match win for Marshall with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Hana Sisirak. UAB got its lone point of the match after Shchipakina rallied from down a set to defeat Dankanych, 0-6, 6-3, 6-0, but the Thundering Herd closed the match with a pair of tiebreak wins. Victoria Walter defeated Hrabalova, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4), while Smith defeated Herrmann, 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5), rallying from down a set and down 3-0 in the second set to win her third straight singles match.
"Like I've been saying all year, we're just continuing the process of getting better each and every day and every match – and we will," Mercer said. "We are working really hard as a team, so it's good to see hard work result in some success."
