Freshman hit for the first cycle in Marshall softball history

IRVING, Texas – Marshall softball freshman Mya Stevenson had an incredible weekend in the Herd's Conference USA opener at Charlotte, and was named C-USA Player of the Week the league office announced Monday. Marshall took the series, 2-1.

Stevenson finished the three-game series batting .727 (8-of-11), drove in 10 runs, hit four doubles, one triple, two home runs, slugged 1.818 and had a .750 on base percentage. She hit for the cycle in the game one victory, the first cycle in program history.

"What a well-deserved honor for Mya," Herd head coach Megan Smith said. "Her performance this weekend was special and definitely sparked our team to a conference series win. I have never seen a more dominant offensive performance in my entire career."

Stevenson started the series with a triple down the right-field line in her first plate appearance. She followed up with a single to center in the third, belted a two-run home run in the fifth and led off the seventh with a double to left. Her homer helped put Marshall ahead for good in the game one victory. At the end of the contest, the freshman was 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBI.

In the second game of the Saturday doubleheader, Stevenson came to the plate in the first inning with two runners on and the Herd already up 1-0 thanks to a leadoff home run from senior Hannah Giammarino. Stevenson attacked the first pitch and sent it way back to left field for a three-run jack to give Marshall a 4-0 lead. It was her team-leading eighth home run of the season, just three away from the Herd freshman record.

The Mesquite, Texas, native continued her assault on the Marshall record book throughout the rest of the game. In the second she came to the plate again, after Charlotte chose to intentionally walk Aly Harrell to load the bases, and drilled a two-run double to left-center. Stevenson made her third plate appearance in the third inning and hit another two-run double, this time to right-center. In her fourth and final plate appearance of the day, the 49ers walked the hot-hitting freshman for the first time. Stevenson finished game two 3-for-3 at the plate, with a walk, two doubles, one home run and seven RBI. She drove in seven of the Herd's first ten runs in the 13-0 win.

And the end of the Saturday doubleheader, Stevenson reached base safely all eight plate appearances, was 7-for-7 at the plate, nine RBI, three doubles, one triple, two home runs and an astounding 2.571 slugging percentage. Her seven RBI in game two is tied for the second most in a single game in Herd history.

Stevenson reached base for the ninth-straight time with her first at-bat in the Sunday series finale. The right-hander smacked another RBI double, her fourth double of the weekend.
