SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – The Marshall women's golf team and junior Shelby Brauckmuller both finished as the runners-up at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate, Tuesday afternoon. It was the fourth time in the 2018-19 season that Marshall has finished as one of the top two teams in an event.
"We had another strong showing even though we did not get the result we wanted," Herd head coach Brooke Burkhammer said. "This is just a small step on the way to playing well at the Conference USA Championship next month. We have a few days off to recover and head to Memphis to compete against a strong field.
"Jackie (Schmidt) had a tremendous tournament and I am extremely proud of her for getting better every day. Shelby (Brauckmuller) continues to be a force for us and can post a low number every day. I am proud to be their coach and a part of the Herd."
The Herd finished just one stroke behind Samford. Marshall began the day four shots back of Samford for the lead and the Herd finished with the best round three score out of the field at 295. Samford just barely held on with a 298 to keep the one-stroke lead.
Brauckmuller bounced back from a rough second round to finish just one stroke back of the leader Emily Uhland of Samford as well. Brauckmuller was tied for the lead after the first round shooting a 1-under 70. In the second round, the junior scored a 76 and fell back to seventh. In the third round, she came roaring back with another 1-under 70 and finished with a 3-over 216 for the event.
Freshman Jackie Schmidt had the best tournament of her young collegiate career and just kept climbing the ranks throughout the event. She came in third, just one shot behind Brauckmuller.
All five players for the Herd finished in the top 20.
