MIAMI – The Marshall softball team took the series finale, 7-1, over the FIU Panthers Sunday afternoon at Felsburg Field. Freshman Mya Stevenson and sophomore Rachel Rousseau knocked two out of the park in the victory.
The Thundering Herd improved to 26-15 and 9-6 in conference. The Panthers fell 22-20 and 4-11 in conference play.
"I'm really proud in the resilience that our team showed today in bouncing back," Herd head coach Megan Smith said. "Specifically Abbie Tolbert who had an uncharacteristic rough outing yesterday. I thought her coming out today and doing what she did is a testament to her fight and determination and I was really proud of her.
"Our offense figured it out today and it was good to see. Yesterday was a rough day for them, but today they came together from top to bottom and they were very productive. And that showed with the score.
"Disappointed with the total weekend but it was good to see our team fight today and come out with a win."
Senior Abigail Tolbert got the start and went the distance, making the adjustments from the rough start in game one. Tolbert earned her 17th win of the season allowing just four hits, one run and striking out two.
Sophomore Armani Brown and senior Hannah Giammarino both recorded two hits. Stevenson drove in two runs and Rousseau plated three. Senior Abigail Estrada scored twice.
Marshall got on the board first in the first inning. Brown recorded her first hit of the day and then sophomore Aly Harrell was hit by a pitch for the first of two times. A wild pitch moved both players up and then Stevenson hit a sacrifice fly to right-center that scored Brown.
The Herd scored three more runs in the fourth as Stevenson got it started with a leadoff, solo homer. It was her ninth of the year. With two outs, junior Blakely Burch hit a double and then Estrada reached on an infield error that allowed Burch to score. Giammarino then drove in Estrada with a single to center to give Marshall a 4-0 lead.
Tolbert and the Herd defense kept FIU off the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth. The Marshall defense played a spotless game and Giammarino had a diving catch in center.
The Herd added three more runs in the sixth, all coming on two outs again. Estrada started the two-out rally with a single and then senior Briana Daiss hit a pinch hit single to put two runners on base. Rousseau then smacked her third home run of the season to left-center, giving Marshall a six-run lead, 7-1.
The Panthers managed to get one runner on base in the bottom of the seventh, but Tolbert and the Herd defense came through again to retire the next three batters.
Marshall returns to the field Friday and Saturday, April 19-20, at home against Louisiana Tech. The Friday doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. at Dot Hicks Field. The Saturday single game at 12 p.m. will also be the Emileigh Cooper Warrior Award game where the 2019 Warrior Award will be handed out.
