Harrell on the second team and Stevenson on the third team Mideast Region
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Sophomore Aly Harrell and freshman Mya Stevenson were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Mideast All-Region teams, the NFCA office announced Thursday. Harrell was named to the second team and Stevenson to the third team.
Â
The nation's Division I programs are separated into 10 regions with each region consisting of three teams. A total of 392 athletes from 163 different programs were represented. NFCA member coaches from each respective region vote on the teams, and all honorees are now eligible for the 2019 NFCA Division I All-American squads. At least one player from Marshall has been honored since 2001.
Â
For Harrell, this is her second all-region honor as she was named third-team Mideast region in 2018. Harrell led the country in combined free passes with 80 from 63 walks and 17 hit-by-pitches. Her 63 walks is a team record, breaking the old mark of 51 set by Rachel Folden (2005-08) in 2007. The sophomore slugger currently holds the mark for the highest on base percentage in a season in program history at .567. Harrell enters the NISC Tournament on Thursday batting .316 with 42 hits, 33 runs, eight doubles, 14 home runs and 40 RBI. She now has 25 career home runs, good for ninth all-time in program history. The Gahanna, Ohio, native was named to first-team All-Conference USA and to the C-USA All-Tournament team. She hit her 14th homer of the season in a 1-0 victory over No. 1 seed North Texas to allow Marshall to advance to the C-USA Championship game.
Â
Stevenson has had a record-smashing rookie campaign for Marshall. The Mesquite, Texas, native leads the team with 18 home runs, tied for the Herd single-season record and seven over the old freshman Marshall record of 11. She was named Conference USA Player of the Week twice. The first time coming after a monster weekend at Charlotte when she became the first player in team history to hit for the cycle in game one. She came right back with seven RBI off two doubles and one homer in game two. Stevenson was awarded for the second time after belting four home runs, including three in the series sweep of Middle Tennessee, and driving in 10 runs in four games. The freshman also leads the Herd with a .338 average, 52 hits, 10 doubles, 53 RBI and a .779 slugging percentage. She was named second-team All-Conference USA, All-Freshman team and to the C-USA All-Tournament team after hitting two more homers down in Birmingham.
Â
Marshall takes the field at 1 p.m. on Thursday against George Washington in the first round of the National Invitational Softball Championship tournament in Lynchburg, Va.
