ST. LOUIS – The Marshall volleyball team started the Billiken Invitational with a quick sweep (25-13, 25-12, 25-22) of the UT-Martin Skyhawks, Friday afternoon from the Chaifetz Pavilion. It was Marshall's third-consecutive sweep.
The Thundering Herd improves to 5-2 while the Skyhawks fall to 3-5.
"It was a great team win," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "We had great defense and distributed the ball really well. Playing the same team twice is not easy. We respect them and we were able to make some in game adjustments, and executed very well with only seven total hitting errors. We stuck to our game plan and we're happy to come out with the win."
The Herd as a team finished the match with a .352 hitting percentage and had just seven attack errors. UT-Martin recorded a .033 hitting percentage and tallied 31 attack errors. The Marshall defense was lively again with 11 total team blocks and 46 digs. Sophomore Isa Dostal was in on six blocks, redshirt junior Ciara Debell contributed on five blocks and junior Destiny Leon was involved in four rejections.
On the offensive side, Debell led the way again with 12 kills and had a .344 hitting percentage. Debell recorded her 100th kill of the season in the second set and has 104 for the year. Senior Ivana Trencheva finished with eight kills and had a .500 hitting percentage. Dostal was very efficient with her attacks recording five kills in seven attempts, no errors and hit at a .744 clip. Sophomore Mion Weldon came through with six kills and had a .417 hitting percentage. Sophomore Sarah Schank added five more kills to her season.
Sophomore Gabrielle Coulter led with 15 assists and junior Sydney Lostumo recorded 13. Senior Amber Weber led the Herd with 11 digs and added four assists as well. Sophomore Autumn Elswick chipped in three assists and two service aces.
Marshall got it rolling right from the start in the first set. The score was tied three times, with the final tie coming at 4-4 and then the Herd turned on the jets with a 6-0 run to take the lead up to 10-4. Marshall continued to dominate and took advantage of the UT-Martin errors. A kill from Leon gave the Herd the 25-13, set one victory.
The second set was almost a duplicate of the first. The score was tied at 2-2 but then the Herd took off as the Skyhawks had 11 attack errors in the set. Debell's 10th kill of the match, followed by three-straight UT-Martin errors led to the 25-12 Marshall win, and put the Herd up 2-0.
The Skyhawks fought back in the third set and held a slim lead throughout the beginning of the set. The score was tied 12 times and there were seven lead changes. A kill by Schank put the score at 22-21 and Marshall held the lead the rest of the way. Another kill from Schank put it at match-point, and the 31st attack error of the day for UT-Martin brought the match to a close.
The Herd continues play at the Billiken Invitational on Saturday taking on the host team, Saint Louis, at 1 p.m. eastern. That match will be broadcast on ESPN+. Marshall then finishes the weekend with a 6 p.m. eastern match on Saturday against Troy University.
