Box Score (PDF)

ST. LOUIS – The Marshall volleyball team continues to roll along with a sweep (25-21, 25-20, 25-21) over the Saint Louis Billikens, Saturday afternoon from the Chaifetz Pavilion. It was the fifth-straight win for the Herd and four-consecutive sweep.

The Thundering Herd improves to 6-2 while Saint Louis falls to 5-3.

"It's never easy to come into someone else's gym and get a win, let alone win in three," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "Our blocking continues to improve and it showed today. Megan Taylor came in and helped us get back on track. We were able to rely on our pins to keep us in system, even when our passing was off. Sarah Schank was impressive both offensively and defensively. She showed up during big moments.

"As a team we are continuing to lean on one another and getting better day by day. We are excited for our next match against Troy."

The Herd recorded 12 total team blocks in the victory. Junior middle blocker Destiny Leon had her hand in 10 of those. Freshman Megan Taylor assisted on five blocks and recorded two kills. Senior Amber Weber led the team in digs with 12 while redshirt junior Ciara Debell was next with 10. And sophomore Sarah Schank had nine.

On offense, Schank and Debell both finished with 11 kills. Schank recorded a .333 hitting percentage. Sophomore Isa Dostal and Leon had four kills each while sophomore Mion Weldon added three. Sophomore Gabrielle Coulter recorded 15 assists, junior Sydney Lostumo had 10 assists and Weber added six. Coulter also tallied three service aces.

Saint Louis scored the first three points of the match before Marshall returned and tied first set up at 3-3. Both teams battled back-and-forth with each having runs of 3-0 and 4-0. However, Marshall went on a 4-0 run sparked by a kill from Dostal that led to set-point and a 24-20 lead. The Billikens added one more point before Debell put it away with her fifth kill of the set, 25-21.

The Herd rattled off a 7-0 run to begin the second set and held advantage for the entire period. Saint Louis battled back to make it a one-point affair at 12-11. However, a kill by Schank pushed the lead back out to two points, and the Herd held off the Billikens for the remainder of the set. Schank finished with four kills in the second as the Herd went up 2-0 on a 25-20 victory.

Marshall trailed early in the third set before coming back and tying things up at 4-4. Then the Herd used another 7-0 run, including three kills from Debell, to take the lead out to 11-5. Saint Louis then used a 4-0 run to close the gap to 11-9 and again the teams traded runs with the set being tied at 17-17. The Herd took a two-point lead and then used a 3-0 run to go up by four, 22-18. The Billikens put two more on the board before Marshall scored back-to-back points to push it to match-point at 24-20. Saint Louis scored one more point, then Taylor came through with her second kill of the day to get the win for the Herd.

Marshall returns to the court at 6 p.m. eastern on Saturday to take on Troy University for its final match of the Billiken Invitational. Live scoring will be available, but no live video for the Troy match.
