Box Score (PDF)

ST. LOUIS – The Marshall volleyball team fell to the Troy Trojans in four sets (23-25, 25-15, 23-25, 18-15) Saturday evening from the Chaifetz Pavilion. The Herd was named the Billiken Invitational Champs with a 2-1 record for the weekend.

The Thundering Herd falls to 6-3 and Troy improves to 7-2.

Junior Destiny Leon was named Billiken Invitational Tournament MVP after being an absolute force in the middle finishing with 20 total blocks including recording 10 in the sweep of Saint Louis. She added 16 kills and had a .324 hitting percentage. Redshirt junior Ciara Debell was named to the All-Tournament team as she blasted away with 45 kills, an average of 4.50 per set, 26 digs and added 11 total blocks.

"This was a great weekend," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "Winning the tournament, and having such amazing competition all weekend was great for us as a team. We continue to grow and adapt each set we play. Hats off to Troy and the continual pressure they put on us defensively. Ciara (Debell) and Destiny (Leon) continue to work hard and stay strong both offensively and on defense. I'm so proud of the leadership they bring and the continual growth mindset they both have shown all season.

"We are excited to get back to practice on Monday and head to EKU for another tough match on the road."

Debell recorded a season-high 22 kills in the match and had a .358 hitting percentage. She now has 574 kills in her Marshall career, and 648 in her collegiate career including her freshman season at Florida Gulf Coast. Leon was second with nine kills. Sophomore Sarah Schank had eight kills and sophomore Mion Weldon tallied seven. Sophomore Gabrielle Coulter finished with a season-best 34 assists and added three kills.

On defense, Marshall recorded 14 total team blocks. Sophomore Isa Dostal had her hand in eight for the Herd. Leon was in on six blocks. Senior Amber Weber led the team with 15 digs while sophomore Autumn Elswick and Debell had 10 digs each. Weber is just six digs shy of 900 in a Marshall uniform. Combined with her freshman season at USF, the senior has 1,020 digs in her collegiate career as she reached the 1,000 plateau earlier on Saturday against Saint Louis.

The firs set was a tight battle as there were five lead changes and the score was tied 11 times. Troy pulled into the lead late in the set and Marshall brought it back within one at 24-23 before the Trojans closed it out to take a 1-0 lead.

Debell came through with eight kills in the second set to help lead the Herd to the 25-15 win. Marshall trailed early but took the lead at 6-5 on a Coulter service ace. The Herd held the lead for the rest of the way and tied the match at 1-1.

The third set was much like the first with Troy jumping out to a lead and Marshall fighting back. There were two lead changes and the score was tied nine times but the Trojans were able to pull it out in the end scoring the last two points.

The fourth set was another fight throughout the first half of the period with eight ties and five lead changes. However, Troy took the lead back at 13-12 and held on to it for the remainder of the set to close out the match.

Marshall stays out on the road with a match at Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. Two days later the Herd travels to Morehead, Ky., for the Morehead Invitational on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 19-20. Marshall will play Morehead State, Coppin State and Southeastern Louisiana.
