Schank leads with 12 kills
RICHMOND, Ky. – The Marshall volleyball team traveled to EKU and took the sweep (25-22, 25-19, 26-24) over the Colonels, Tuesday evening.
The Thundering Herd improves to 7-3 and EKU falls to 5-6.
"We came into a tough environment tonight and showed some resilience against a gritty Eastern Kentucky team," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "We did a great job sticking to the game plan and executing it as a team. Amber (Weber) stepped up tonight leading the floor defense which has been a big focus for us this week. This is a great match to get us ready for our final non-conference tournament in Morehead this week."
Sophomore Sarah Schank lead the Herd with 12 kills and redshirt junior Ciara Debell recorded 10. Sophomore Gabrielle Coulter had 19 assists and junior Sydney Lostumo tallied 17 assists. On the defensive side, senior libero Amber Weber led with 12 digs, she is now over 900 during her Marshall career, and Coulter was next with nine. Sophomore Isa Dostal added four more blocks to her season total, now up to 47.
All three sets were a battle between the Herd and the Colonels. The first set featured 19 ties and eight lead changes. The second set had six ties and four lead changes and the third had 14 ties and nine lead changes.
In the first set, Marshall led 22-20 but EKU came back to tie it up at 22-22. However, two Colonel errors brought it to set-point and then Schank ended the set with a kill, 25-22.
The second set featured a few extended runs from both sides. The Herd scored five in-a-row to take the lead at 14-13. EKU tied it up but then Marshall rolled off a 3-0 run to get up to 17-14. The Herd held the lead for the remainder of the set and again two more errors from EKU came at the end of the period to give Marshall the 2-0 lead.
EKU fought hard in the third set to try and avoid the sweep. However, the Herd kept coming on strong including coming back from trailing 22-19. Marshall went on a 5-0 run to move it to match-point at 24-22. EKU rallied to tie it at 24-24 before back-to-back kills from Schank ended the match and gave the sweep to the Herd.
Marshall has one last road trip to the Morehead Invitational hosted by the Morehead State Eagles, Sept. 19-20. The Herd will play Morehead State on Sept. 19 at 6 p.m., Coppin State on Sept. 20 at 11 a.m. and then Southeastern Louisiana on Sept. 20 at 3:30 p.m. The Herd will then finally have a home match, after 13 on the road, as Southern Miss comes to Huntington on Friday Sept. 27 for the beginning of Conference USA action.
