RICHMOND, Ky. – The Marshall volleyball team hits the road again for a midweek match at the Eastern Kentucky Colonels, Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The Thundering Herd enter the match 6-3 while the Colonels come in at 5-5.

Marshall is off to a great start at 6-3. The Herd rolled off five-straight wins including four-consecutive sweeps. Last time out, Marshall won the Billiken Invitational with a 2-1 record. The Herd swept UT-Martin and Saint Louis before falling in four sets to Troy. Junior middle blocker Destiny Leon was named Tournament MVP, as well as Conference USA Co-Defensive Player of the Week, and redshirt junior Ciara Debell was named to the All-Tournament team for the third time this season. Leon had 20 total blocks and Debell recorded 45 kills over the weekend.

This season Marshall has a very balanced attack. Debell leads the way with 137 kills and is averaging 4.28 per set. Sophomore Sarah Schank has been playing very well in her second year as she is second with 80 kills and is averaging 2.50 per set. Sophomore Mion Weldon has 49 and Leon is fourth with 46. Junior Sydney Lostumo leads the Herd with 10 service aces and Schank is right behind with nine. Lostumo is also second on the team with 149 assists as sophomore Gabrielle Coulter leads with 165.

On defense Marshall's biggest improvement has been the play up front as Dostal, Leon, Debell and Weldon have been in the face of opposing attackers. The Herd averaged just over 1.50 blocks per set last season, but in 2019 Marshall is averaging 2.81 per set. Dostal leads the team with 43 total blocks and Leon is right behind with 42. Debell has tallied 28 total rejections and Weldon has 18. Freshman Megan Taylor has made her impact felt as well in her opportunities with nine blocks and 17 kills on offense.

Senior libero Amber Weber continues to be the vocal leader on the floor and leads the team in digs with 120. Weber recorded her 1,000 career dig in Marshall's win over Saint Louis. She now has 1,020 and 894 in her three seasons in a Herd uniform. Weber recorded 126 during her freshman campaign at South Florida.

Opponent
The EKU Colonels are .500 this season and are coming off a 2-1 weekend at the Zips Invitational in Akron, Ohio. EKU swept Seton Hall and St. Francis, but were swept by Akron. The Colonels are looking to rebound after a 5-23 season and have a first-year head coach as well in Johnna Fouch who has been an assistant with the program since 2014.

Abby Noll leads the team with 107 kills this season, an average of 3.57 per set. There are four more players with at least 50 kills this year in Jovana Bulatovic (67), Kaylin Johnson (64), Kat Caserma-Kloeble (54) and Rachel Woody (50). Woody has also been the main setter for EKU with 275 assists. Libero Dena Tekavec leads the team with 119 digs, an average of 3.72 per set. At the net, EKU is averaging 1.81 blocks per set and Johnson is the leader with 27 total blocks.

Marshall has three more matches on the road before finally getting to play in front of the home crowd. The Herd plays at the Morehead Invitational, Sept. 19-20, against Morehead State, Coppin State and Southeastern Louisiana. Marshall will finally get to play at home on Friday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m., against Southern Miss as the Herd begins Conference USA action.
