ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Marshall's men and women's cross country team competed in the Adidas Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, South Carolina on Saturday.
The women won the 5000-meter race. Leading the group was sophomore Madelyn Garrison (18:59.1), who recorded a fourth-place finish. Freshmen Julia Mueller (fifth, 19:05.3), Sydney Smith (sixth, 19:11.3) and Abby Herring (eighth, 19:20.7) also posted top-10 finishes, while sophomores Myah McAlister (13th, 20:12.3), Alexandra Evans (17th, 20:17.9) and senior Audreana Lewis (18th, 20:35.5) rounded out the performances. The women tallied a total of 28 points at this event, ahead of second-place Coastal Carolina (46).
Leading the men was freshman Ronnie Saunders in fourth (25:12.3) and right behind him was senior Alex Minor in fifth (25:27.6) on the 8,000-meter course. Freshman Evan White notched a seventh-place finish (25:37.0), while senior Daniel Green (ninth, 25:56.5), freshman Jacob Birurakis (11th, 26:10.4), senior Hunter Deem (17th, 26:39.0) and freshman Paul Sepulveda (20th, 26:44.8) posted finishes for Marshall. The men finished with a total of 23 points.

Marshall assistant coach Caleb Bowen
"Both teams looked great today. Having our top four in the top 10 on both sides is just awesome. Our fifth runners were 11th on the men's side and 13th on the women's. That's a great pack.
It's hard for me to have a performer of the meet because we had many who were deserving. Freshman Ronnie Saunders led the team from the start and ran fantastic. Alex Minor had a very strong day as well as Dan Green. Freshmen Evan White and Jacob Birurakis debuted extremely well and were our third and fifth guys. It was so much fun to watch.
On the ladies side, Maddy (Garrison) led the Herd from the front throughout the race but was closely followed by freshmen Julia Muller, Sydney Smith and Abby Herring. Myah McAlister rounded out our top five in 13th place and had a great race as well.
This was a great meet for us. The course was fantastic, the weather cooperated and we came out with confidence. We trained right through this one so we are excited to see us continue to progress going on to our next meet at Louisville."
