HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team took down the Butler Bulldogs, 2-1, Friday night in front of a lively crowd at Hoops Family Field. Junior Jamil Roberts scored both goals for the Herd.

The Thundering Herd improves to 2-0-1 while the Bulldogs fall to 2-1-0.

"To beat a team like Butler, a team that will be right there playing for the Big East championship, you know to beat a team like that when at times you looked good and to come out on top is going to give us a lot of confidence," head coach Chris Grassie said.

The two goals from Roberts tied his single-match career-high that he set at the end of the 2018 season against Florida Atlantic. He also now has eight goals in his Marshall career.

Marshall dominated possession through the top half of the first half. Roberts got the Herd on the board first in the 18th minute, scoring on a free kick with a bending shot from about 25 yards away on the right side and put it into the left bottom corner of the net. The Bulldogs turned on the pressure through the last 20 minutes of the second half, but the Marshall defense and redshirt senior keeper Paulo Pita were up to the challenge. Pita recorded three of his five saves in the first half. The Herd went in at the break up 1-0.

Butler evened up the match with a goal in the 51st minute. Despite allowing the sneaky goal, Pita responded with two more clutch saves later in the match. Just over 12 minutes after the Bulldogs tied it up, Roberts took a pass from junior classmate Pedro Dolabella to the right side and fired it past the keeper to the left corner again.

"(Roberts) has made his freshman and sophomore errors and now he is playing like a grown man, like an upper classman," coach Grassie said. "And that is great. But what is also good for us is that we have five or six guys that we can play up front. We can rotate different guys in and give different looks. Jamil being an older guy, her understands that if he has to play left side, right side or center that he brings the energy and the skill no matter where he is."

It was a physical match that featured 32 combined fouls and seven yellow cards. The action on the pitch never got out of control as the teams battled throughout the night. The Herd defense continued to stop the Butler attempts to hang on to the one-goal lead.

Marshall returns to the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m., against East Tennessee State from Hoops Family Field.
