HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team made it back-to-back home wins with a 2-1 victory over East Tennessee State, Tuesday night from Hoops Family Field.
The Thundering Herd improves to 3-0-1 and the Buccaneers fall to 1-3.
"It was a scrappy game," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "We won our set-piece battles and we won both of those headers and they were vital. You knew all of the goals were going to be scrappy and we just had to manage the flow of the game and with all of the stoppages and I thought the guys did a really good job."
It was a very physical match that featured 28 total fouls, four yellow cards and many clock stoppages in between excellent play from both teams. It took almost the entire first half before the scoreless tie was broken when junior Pedro Dolabella headed in his second goal of the season in the 43rd minute. Dolabella knocked in the low shot from just outside the six-yard box off a cross from junior Jamil Roberts.
The Herd held on to the lead for the remainder of the period and entered the break, up 1-0. Marshall outshot ETSU in the first half 8-4, and 3-2 in shots on goal. The Bucs two shots on goal in the first half were blocked by Marshall defenders right in front of the net.
ETSU came out aggressive in the second half and it paid off nine minutes and two seconds into the period with the equalizer. Hauk Andreas Fossen sent in a deflection off his own first attempt into the far right corner. However, one minute and 32 seconds later Marshall took back the lead as freshman Max Schneider scored his first career goal in the 56th minute with a header off a corner kick from senior Jonas Westmeyer.
The teams battled throughout the remainder of the contest, but the Herd was able to hang on for the hard-fought victory.
Marshall continues its early season homestand with the Conference USA opener on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 11 a.m., as South Carolina comes to Hoops Family Field. The home matches keep rolling along for the Herd as Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) visits Huntington on Sept. 17, and then top-ranked Akron stops by on Sept. 21.
