South Carolina Visits Hoops Family Field for Men’s Soccer Conference USA Opener

Kickoff for Herd versus Gamecocks set for Saturday at 11 a.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team begins Conference USA action Saturday morning as the South Carolina Gamecocks make the trip to Hoops Family Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.
The Thundering Herd enters the match 3-0-1 while South Carolina is 3-1.

Last Meeting: Oct. 20, 2018 at Columbia – Marshall won 2-1 in double overtime, Jamil Roberts scored game-winner in the 107th minute.
Marshall is off to a great start at 3-0-1 and has won its first two home matches of the season, both by a score of 2-1. The Herd held off an aggressive Butler squad in the home-opener as junior Jamil Roberts scored both goals in his first start of the season. Against ETSU this past Tuesday, junior Pedro Dolabella scored his second goal of the season, seventh of his career, with a header in the 43rd minute and then freshman Max Schneider recorded his first career goal with another header in the 56th minute that proved to be the game-winner. Dolabella and Roberts lead the Herd in scoring with two goals and one assist each. Senior Jonas Westmeyer is next with one goal and two assists. Schneider has an assist to go along with his first goal. Freshman Milo Yosef and sophomore Jan-Erik Leinhos have both scored one goal each.
Senior defender Illal Osmanu and redshirt senior keeper Paulo Pita lead the team in minutes played with all 380 this year. Osmanu has been a key leader on the defense in leading Marshall to its great start. Pita has allowed three goals, tallied 12 saves, sports a 0.71 goals against average and has a .800 save percentage. The Santos, Sao Paulo, Brazil, native has one shutout this season. Pita is 10-7-4 in his Marshall career and has 83 career saves.
Opponent
The South Carolina Gamecocks began the season with a 4-1 loss to a ranked Clemson squad – currently No. 13 – and since rattled off three-straight wins. All coming in overtime. The streak began with a 2-1 win over Gardner-Webb as Tucker Monheimer scored in the 93rd minute. It continued three days later with a 1-0 victory against USC-Upstate with Brian Banahan scoring in the 99th minute. And finally, South Carolina defeated Mercer on Wednesday as Monheimer came through again in the 94th minute.
Monheimer and Banahan lead the team with two goals each. Logan Frost has one goal this season. Junior keeper Buenyamin Yusufoglu has been the mainstay in the net this season with all 375 minutes played. Yusufoglu has allowed five goals, a 1.20 goals against average, has 25 saves and a .833 save percentage.

The last meeting came on Oct. 30, 2018 at South Carolina and the Herd earned the hard-fought, double-overtime victory, 2-1. The Gamecocks scored first in the eighth minute as Tucker Monheimer found the back of the net. In the 14th minute, Vinicius Fernandes scored the equalizer on an assist from Roberts. Neither team could find the go-ahead goal through the remaining 86 minutes and two seconds of regulation, or in the first overtime period. With just three minutes and 26 seconds left on the clock, Roberts scored from the left side off a pass from Westmeyer to give the Herd the win.
