Sophomore outfielder is eligible to play in 2020
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall softball head coach Megan Smith announced the addition of sophomore Grace Chelemen to the Herd. Chelemen is a transfer from the University of Michigan and is eligible to play immediately in the 2020 season.
Â
The Woodhaven, Mich., native chose to come to Marshall because, "they have all the core values that I do. They believe in me and I love the community here."
Â
Chelemen played in 36 games and made one start for the 19th-ranked Wolverines in 2019. The lefty-hitter made her collegiate debut against USF on Feb. 9 and recorded her first career hit in her very first collegiate at bat. She earned her first career start against New Mexico State on March 8.
Â
Chelemen scored 10 runs including the game-tying run (1-1) in the sixth inning against No. 2 UCLA in an eventual 3-1 win (March 1). Chelemen also scored in the fifth inning that put Michigan up 2-0 in the Wolverines 3-2, Big Ten Title victory over Minnesota. She was brought in off the bench all three times that Michigan played against James Madison in the NCAA Regionals. The outfielder also scored runs against South Dakota, Kent State, Nebraska, Indiana, twice against Penn State and twice against Maryland.
Â
Chelemen was 3-of-4 in stolen base attempts with successful swipes against Indiana, Maryland and in the NCAA Regionals versus James Madison. She was also walked twice and hit by a pitch once.
Â
Team 27 of the Thundering Herd softball squad begins the 2020 season on Feb. 7 against Saint Francis at the USC-Upstate Classic.
