Wheeler Named to Preseason All-Conference USA Team

Sophomore led Herd in scoring last season
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall women's basketball sophomore guard Savannah Wheeler was named to the Preseason All-Conference USA Team, the league office announced Wednesday.
Wheeler led the Thundering Herd in scoring at 13.4 points per game and was named to the C-USA All-Freshman team this past season.
The Catlettsburg, Ky., native got her Marshall career off to a great start with 18 points and four steals against Kentucky Christian, then added 19 points including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc in the win over Norfolk State. Wheeler was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week for her efforts. She was named Freshman of the Week for the second time on Feb. 17 after helping to lead Marshall to wins over UTSA and UTEP, combining for 29 points, hitting 6-of-11 from three, six rebounds and six assists.
Wheeler played in all 30 games, starting 17 and scored in double-figures 24 times. She scored over 20 points two times. First with 22 against FIU (Jan. 30) and then added 25 versus Florida Atlantic two days later.
The now sophomore guard was very effective at getting to the rim and drawing fouls, as well as capitalizing on those free throw opportunities. Wheeler was the only freshman in 2019-20 to be nationally ranked in the top 40 in free throws made (T-37th, 130) and free throw percentage (40th, 83.9%). She finished second in C-USA in free throw percentage as well. Wheeler's best performance from the line came in the Herd's overtime victory over Southern Miss in the first round of the C-USA Championships as she was 13-of-14, including hitting 5-of-6 in OT. She ended the game with 19 points.
Along with scoring, Wheeler also led the Herd in steals (41) and assists (83).
