HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –
The Marshall women's basketball begins the new year with a pair of games against the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters this weekend. Tipoff from the Cam Henderson Center is Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 3.

The Thundering Herd is 1-1, while the Lady Techsters come in at 5-1.

Last Time Out: Dec. 9, 79-45 loss at No. 9 Kentucky
The Marshall women's basketball team dropped its first road contest of the 2020-21 season, 79-45, to the ninth-ranked Kentucky Wildcats. Sophomore Alexis Johnson scored a career-high 16 points in the loss.

Marshall fell to 1-1 while Kentucky improved to 5-0.

Johnson built on her career-day against Radford, leading the Herd versus the Wildcats. Johnson shot 6-of-9 from the field, including 2-for-2 from three. She added four rebounds and three steals. Johnson has already surpassed her freshman season points total of 27 in just the first two games of the year, now with 28.

Sophomore Savannah Wheeler was next with nine points. Freshman CC Mays contributed six and redshirt sophomore Mahogany Matthews finished with five. The Herd shot 30.4 percent from the floor in the game, but did convert 14-of-20 free throws.

It was a fight for the Herd to get rolling in the first quarter as the Wildcats began the game with a 13-0 run. Johnson tallied the first points for Marshall at the 4:41 mark with a layup off a great pass from freshman Ksenija Mitric. The Herd managed just seven points in the opening frame as Johnson scored four and Matthews had three. Marshall trailed 22-7.

The Herd came out with a little more fire in the second quarter, outscoring Kentucky for most of the period. Johnson scored five more points while Mays added five and junior Lorelei Roper netted four. With 1:13 left in the second, Wheeler grabbed a steal by mid-court and then stopped for a long jumper just inside the three-point line, buried the shot and cut the deficit to eight. The Wildcats called timeout and then finished the quarter on a 7-0 run. Marshall went in at the half, trailing 41-26.

Kentucky dominated in the second half, pulling away for its fifth win of the season.

The Series
This is the eighth meeting between the two schools, with the Lady Techsters holding a 4-3 lead. Louisiana Tech won the last meeting by the score of 60-50 in Ruston. In that game, Tech's Amber Dixon and Grayson Bright combined for 30 points to lead the Lady Techsters to 11-11 overall and 3-8 in Conference USA, while Marshall dropped to 9-13 and 4-7 in the league.

Dixon scored 16 points and Bright added 14 with nine rebounds. Raizel Guinto posted 11 points on three 3-pointers. Anna Larr Roberson had an impressive game off the bench with eight points and 14 rebounds (10 defensive).

Marshall was led in scoring by Savannah Wheeler's 14 points (10 in the first half) and four assists. Taylor Pearson and Princess Clemons had six rebounds apiece and the latter also posted a career-high six steals.

Scouting the Lady Techsters
Louisiana Tech is off to great start at 5-1 in the fifth season under co-head coaches Brooke and Scott Stoehr. The lone loss came at then-25th-ranked Texas, 84-57. The Lady Techsters have had just one game canceled to begin the year due to COVID-related issues (December 15 vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff). Tech is led in scoring by three players averaging double-digits with Keiunna Walker (16.3 ppg), Anna Larr Roberson (12.5) and Brianna Harris (11.4). Harris had a career-best 25 points in the loss to Texas, shooting 9-of-11 from the floor, 6-of-7 from the line and added eight boards. Roberson also leads the team on the glass with 7.5 per contest and is tied for the conference lead with three double-doubles this season. Raizel Guinto (19 assists) and Amber Dixon (14 assists) have been the top passers, combining for 34 assists. The Lady Techsters are hitting 42.3 percent from the floor and 73.8 percent from the line, but have struggled from three-point range knocking down just 27.5 percent. However, Tech is not afraid to attempt the three, averaging 17 shots per game. The team also has no problem drawing fouls and getting to the line (42nd in the NCAA in free throws made - 104) as four players have attempted 16 or more, with Walker leading the way at 44 attempts (31 made). Tech is averaging 18.7 turnovers per game, while forcing 21. 5 per contest.
