The Herd has won five consecutive games over the Miners in Huntington, dating back to a 65-56 win on February 13, 2010.
The Miners are second in the conference in rebounding offense (40.7) and assists (15.0), but last in blocked shots at 1.7 per game.
Last Time Out: Feb. 13 vs. UTSA (W, 66-53)
The Marshall women's basketball team went 17-for-17 at the free throw line and put four players in double figures to down visiting UTSA 66-53 Thursday evening in the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd, winners of three of its last four, improved to 10-13 and 5-7 in Conference USA with the win, while UTSA dropped to 6-17 and 2-10 in defeat.
Marshall was led in scoring by Savannah Wheeler and Taylor Pearson, who tallied 13 apiece, while Khadaijia Brooks (11) posted her first C-USA double-digit scoring effort of the season. Princess Clemons added 10 and a game-high five steals. Lorelei Roper narrowly missed her first double-double with eight points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
UTSA, who was without the services of leading scorer Mikayla Woods (15 points per game), was led by Karrington Donald's 21 points (14 in the fourth quarter) and Evelyn Omemmah contributed 14. Adryana Quezada notched a game-high 11 boards.
The Roadrunners ran out to a 7-0 start on Quezada layups and a 3-pointer by Karley Larson in the game's first one minute, 55 seconds. Marshall, though, ran off 11 of the next 15 points to tie the score after one period of play and led by six (28-22) at the half. That came despite a 4-for-23 clip (17.4 percent) from downtown.
The Herd gradually chugged to a comfortable margin in the second half, building its advantage to as many as 19 (56-37) on two Clemons free throws with 7:14 left in the game.
Marshall, due in large part to the 10 points scored by Clemons, held a 14-2 edge in bench scoring.
"It was a good solid win," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "It wasn't perfect, but it was good enough. We needed it. We're moving in the right direction. I thought we really pressed in the first half. I thought we did a good job until the end. I thought we did a decent job on the glass. Good win … we're working our way up and I can handle that."
Taking Care of the Ball
Marshall has committed fewer (or as many) turnovers as the opposition in five consecutive games. On the season, the Herd stands second in Conference USA in total turnovers (323) and third in turnovers per game (14.0).
Princess Pours in the Points
Princess Clemons has averaged 9.2 points since entering the starting lineup for Marshall's last six games, a clip that is up from 3.3 in her first 17 games this season.
Making Them Count
Marshall has had a higher free throw percentage than the opposition in its last 11 games. That's nothing new for the Thundering Herd. Last season, Marshall had a 13-game streak of free throw percentage equal to, or better, than its opponents (January 19 to March 13). In these last 11 games, the Herd has connected on 75.7 percent (162-for-214) compared to 58.5 percent (127-for-217) for its opponents. Against UTSA, the Herd made all 17 of its attempts, a number that is tied for fourth nationally among those schools who have posted a perfect single-game percentage. The last time the Thundering Herd made more in a game without a miss was February 6, 2016 when it went 18-for-18 in an 80-76 win ... at UTSA. For the season, Marshall ranks second in C-USA games at 75.0 percent (171-for-228).
Pearson's Resurgence
Marshall's Taylor Pearson has averaged 14.2 points over her last nine games. That figure is up from her 4.7 per game clip over the previous six games. The Columbus, Ohio native has also made 13 of her last 14 at the charity stripe. On the season, she is third in the conference in 3-point shooting at 39.4 percent (39-for-99).
Season/Career-Highs
Lorelei Roper had a career-high 10 rebounds in the 66-53 win over UTSA, while Princess Clemons (five free throws made), Khadaijia Brooks (four free throws made) and Paige Shy (three assists) all set season-highs in the victory.
Wheeler Attacks
Since entering the starting lineup at North Texas on January 4, Savannah Wheeler has gotten to the free throw line 75 times in those last 11 games (6.8 per game), making 64 for 85.3 percent. In her previous 12 games, she got to the charity stripe just 38 times (3.2 per contest).
Leading and Leading Late
Marshall is 10-1 this season when leading at the half and 9-1 when leading with five minutes left in regulation. Since the beginning of last season, the Thundering Herd is 23-6 when leading at the break and 23-3 when leading at the five-minute mark.
Hitting the Glass, Controlling the Paint
The Thundering Herd is 14-5 since the start of last season when it outrebounds the opposition and 17-5 when it scores more in the paint.
Block Party
Senior Ashley Saintigene has returned to the Herd lineup with a vengeance this season on the defensive side. The senior has swatted 45 shots in 16 games to start the year. As a team, Marshall is 47th in the country in blocks per game (4.4).
The Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., native is fourth all-time in program history in blocked shots with 126 and her 45 this season puts her sixth in Marshall's single-season records. The 98 combined points between Charlotte and Marshall on January 16 were the fewest in a Thundering Herd game since February 7, 2015 when North Texas edged Marshall 45-42 in Denton.
