Stevenson and Burch homer for the Herd
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Marshall softball team kept the offense rolling on Sunday in a 9-1 victory over the Indiana State Sycamores at the Chattanooga Challenge.
Â
The Thundering Herd improves to 5-3 overall.
Â
The Sycamores scored first in the top of the first inning, and then the Herd held them off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Â
Junior pitcher Laney Jones earned the start and went the distance for her fourth win of the season. Jones allowed five hits and struck out four.
Â
The Herd offense got rolling right from the start in the bottom of the first as 10 batters came to the plate. Sophomore Grace Chelemen led off with a walk and was followed by back-to-back singles from juniors Aly Harrell and Saige Pye. With the bases loaded, sophomore Mya Stevenson was hit by a pitch to bring home Chelemen to tie the game.
Â
Junior Katie Adams then hit a single to right that scored Harrell, followed immediately by a single from junior Rachel Rousseau that plated Pye. Senior Sierra Huerta ripped a double to right-center that scored two more runs, leading to a pitching change for Indiana State, and Marshall led 5-1.
Â
In the second inning, Harrell and Pye reached base with back-to-back singles again. Stevenson then blasted a three-run home run to left. It was her fourth homer of the year and 24th of her career. Marshall led by seven, 8-1.
Â
The Herd was held off the scoreboard in the third, but was able to put up one more run in the fourth as senior Blakely Burch hit a solo shot to right to gain the eight-run lead, 9-1.
Â
Indiana State put two runners on base in the top of the fifth, however the Marshall defense recorded the final out to end the game in the fifth.
Â
Marshall recorded 15 hits in the game. Junior Armani Brown was 3-for-3 at the plate. Harrell, Pye, Stevenson, Adams and Huerta all had two hits each. Every batter for the Herd reached base safely at least once.
Â
Marshall stays on the road as it travels to the Bobby Bailey Memorial Tournament, hosted by Kennesaw State, Feb. 21-23. The Herd takes on East Tennessee State, Kennesaw State and Rhode Island.
