Riley Seals the Deal for the Herd in First Home Dual of the Season over North Texas

Marshall beat North Texas, 4-3, on Friday
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall (7-3) defeated North Texas (7-3) Friday (Feb. 21) in the its first home dual of the season.
"It was a great match," head coach John Mercer said. "It came down to the last match. The tie breaker in the third is about as far as you can go. I thought we did a great job fighting. It makes for a great competitive sport and a fun thing to watch and be a part of."
Tied at three, the match came down to Madison Riley. Riley was able to seal the deal beating Sophia Hummel, 6-3, 7-6, 7-6(2).
"It feels so good," Riley said. "You have just got to keep your eyes down and focused on what is happening."
Marshall took the early lead with Riley and Madi Ballow winning the first doubles match, 6-2. North Texas fought back giving Daniela Dankanych and Anna Smith a defeat. However, Liz Stefancic and Jutte Van Hansewyck beat Alexandra Heczey and Khaled Badwy, 7-5; giving Marshall the first point of the match.
With Marshall leading 1-0, Smith took the first victory beating Heczey, 6-3, 6-0, to give Marshall the 2-0 lead. Mean Green answered quickly handing losses to Van Hansewyck and Ballow.
All knotted up at two, Stefancic gave Marshall the lead defeating Kexuan Zhou in three sets. The Mean Green refused to back down with Maria Ponomareva finishing on top of Dankanych after a hard-fought match. Riley wrapped it up for the Herd with the last singles win of the night.
Marshall returns to the Huntington Tennis Club to face FIU in the second match of the weekend on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 11 a.m., in Huntington.
