Taylor Collects Double-Double in Home Win over FAU

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Led by five in double-figure scoring and a double-double from Andrew Taylor, Marshall men's basketball (15-15, 9-8 C-USA) records a win over Florida Atlantic (16-15, 8-10 C-USA), 94-82, on Wednesday night in the final regular-game of the 2019-20 season at the Cam Henderson Center.
 
"That was a good game," Marshall head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the win. "They (FAU) played hard and well. Their coach is good too. It will be a battle when we go to Frisco. You get to enjoy it whether we win or lose. You should enjoy it and the moment because the players are giving their best. Tonight, we won, and that's even better."
 
Taylor recorded the first double-double of his career with 16 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. The redshirt-freshman guard went 6-for-9 from the field, made both of his three-pointers, and had four assists to no turnovers.
 
Guard Taevion Kinsey led the way with a game-high 20 points on a 7-for-13 night from the field, going a perfect 5-for-5 at the free-throw line. The sophomore added a game-high six assists and five rebounds in the win.
 
Following up Kinsey, was redshirt-junior forward Jannson Williams with 18. Williams went 4-for-8 from behind-the-arc, 6-for-6 on his free-throw attempts, brought down six rebounds and rejected a game-high five shots.
 
Juniors Mikel Beyers and Jarrod West closed out five Marshall student-athletes in double-figure scoring with 12 and 10, respectively. West added five assists and a team-high two steals in the victory.
 
Taylor scored the opening basket with a layup as Marshall started the game on an 8-2 run. The start propelled Marshall to never trail in the first 20 minutes of action, leading by as many as nine and as few as one in the first half.
 
The Herd entered the break up by a score of 45-38 as West drained a three at the buzzer.
 
MU continued its dominance into the second half. The Owls came with in a two-point margin in the final stanza, but Marshall never wavered. A 5-0 run from Williams with 2:30 minutes to go in the contest gave the Thundering Herd a 14-point lead, 92-78, its largest of the contest, as it cruised to victory.
 
NOTES
The 94 points are a season-high for the Herd.
 
Marshall had 20 assists in a game for the third time this season.
 
MU shot 53.4 percent (31-for-58) from the field, the fifth time this season it shot above 50 percent from the field. It also went 12-for-22 from three-point range for 54.5 percent, its best such percentage of the season.
 
West's two steals leave him seven away from breaking Skip Henderson's men's basketball program mark of 208. He's also scored at least 10 points in 15 of the last 16 games.
 
Kinsey collected his sixth 20-point game of the season, five of which have come in conference play.
 
Taylor has scored 10 or more points in the last contests, while Williams has reached 10 points in three of the last four games. Williams' 18 are a season-high.
 
Beyers has reached double-figures in four of the last seven contests.
 
Williams has blocked five shots in two games this season.
 
Marshall is 4-0 when it has five players reach double-digit points and it was its first win of the season when giving up 80 or more points this season.
 
Williams has 147 total blocks and is one away from being third all-time in program history behind Omar Roland (1988-90).
 
UP NEXT
Marshall closes out the regular season at UTSA on Saturday. A win clinches the sixth seed at the Conference Tournament where a loss puts the Herd in the seventh seed.
