Boone played 2017-19 and will serve as the volunteer assistant

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall softball head coach Megan Smith Lyon announced the addition of former Thundering Herd baseball pitcher Sam Boone to the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant, Wednesday. Boone played for Marshall from 2017-19, and joins fellow assistant coaches Corey Lyon and Maddie Holub.

"We are thrilled to welcome Sam back to Huntington and to have him as a part of our staff," coach Smith Lyon said. "His strong work ethic, attention to detail and passion for teaching the game will be a tremendous asset to our team."

Since playing at Marshall, Boone was an assistant baseball coach and recruiting coordinator at Shoreline Community College, where he played the 2016 season. He was also an instructor at Base By Pros in Lynnwood, Wash., in charge of research and development on the pitching front, while giving lessons to athletes from various backgrounds.

"I am very grateful for the opportunity coach Smith Lyon is giving me to come back to Marshall and help play a small part in sustaining the tradition of Marshall softball," Boone said. "Coach Smith Lyon and her staff are proven winners and all you could ask for in a new employer."

A native of Shoreline, Wash., north of Seattle and near Puget Sound, Boone began his college career at Washington State in 2015. He then transferred to Shoreline Community College in 2016 where he appeared in 37.2 innings and struck out 47 batters. Boone then made the nearly 2,500-mile move from the Pacific Northwest east, and spent the next three seasons pitching for the Herd.

His first year with the Green & White was cut short by injury and Boone was able to get a medical redshirt. Working his way back from Tommy John surgery, the right-hander appeared in 8.2 innings in 2018. As a senior in 2019, Boone appeared in 14 contests coming from the bullpen. He did not give up an earned run through his first eight appearances, a total of 11 innings. Boone finished the season with 19 strikeouts in 15.1 innings. He earned the win against Iona (Feb. 23) and recorded the save versus Eastern Michigan (March 9).
