Thundering Herd earns series split
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall's women's basketball program built a 17-point third quarter lead over visiting Louisiana Tech Saturday and held on for a 61-57 wire-to-wire victory at the Cam Henderson Center.
The win improved the Thundering Herd's record to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in Conference USA. The Lady Techsters fell to 6-2 and 1-1 in the league as well.
Marshall got a team-high 16 points from Savannah Wheeler, while Paige Shy had her best collegiate performance with a career-highs in points (11) and rebounds (nine). Taylor Pearson also added 10 points. Mahogany Matthews continued to be a force on the defensive end with five blocked shots.
Tech was led by Raizel Guinto's 20 points and Keiunna Walker shook off a first-half injury to tally 12 to go with Anna Larr Roberson's 11. Amber Dixon posted a game-high 12 rebounds and five assists.
"Our players deserve credit for seeing an opportunity and taking advantage of it," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "I thought Paige (Shy) was really, really good today. But yeah, we're deeper. We couldn't have survived (being down to eight players) in years past."
The Thundering Herd went up by six (14-8) on an Alexis Johnson layup at the 2:04 mark of the first quarter, which proved to be the margin through one period of play. Louisiana Tech had another tough shooting day, making just three of 17 (17.6 percent) from the field in the first period en route to a 19-for-65 (29.2 percent) afternoon. Marshall's advantage grew to as many as 15 twice in the second quarter before settling at 34-21 at halftime.
The Lady Techsters called timeout at the 3:41 mark of the third quarter after Marshall's Wheeler nailed a 3-pointer to give the home team its largest lead at 17 (46-29). From that point though, the visitors gradually chipped away, scoring 26 of the game's next 34 points to pull to within one (55-54) on a Roberson layup with a minute to go.
However, the Thundering Herd used trips to the free throw line and stops on the defensive end to keep Tech at bay. CC Mays connected on a pair of freebies with six seconds left for the contest's final margin.
As was the case in its 61-51 overtime victory Friday evening, Tech again controlled the offensive glass to the tune of a 17-6 margin, but Marshall's 12-2 edge off the bench proved to be crucial on Saturday.
The Thundering Herd is scheduled to travel to Charlotte next Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (3 p.m.). The 49ers were to travel to WKU this week but those games were postponed due to COVID-19 related concerns within the Charlotte program.
