Herd had five first place finishers, including three freshman solo performances
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Marshall University women's swimming and diving team fell to the Ohio University Bobcats in a dual meet Sunday at the Fitch Natatorium with a final score of 167-130.
Rachel Hughes, Sarah McGlumphy, Heather Sigmon and Darby Coles were honored for Senior Day.
"Our staff was so proud of how our team showed up today," Marshall Head Coach Ian Walsh said. "It's been a tough year so far for many reasons, but we took advantage of racing a talented Ohio University team this afternoon. It was also a special day as we recognized four team members, Darby Coles, Rachel Hughes, Sarah McGlumphy, and Heather Sigmon that have given so much to our program."
The Herd had five first-place finishes in the 16 events. Those events were: 200 Yard Medley Relay, 100 Yard Breaststroke, 50 Yard Freestyle, 100 Yard Butterfly and 1 Meter Diving.
"We kicked off the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 200 Medley Relay which began a back-and-forth battle throughout the entire meet," Walsh said. "We had three freshmen win their first collegiate event today (Paige Banton – 100 Breaststroke, Klava Katayama – 50 Freestyle & 100 Butterfly, Alaina Laster – 1m Diving) which is really special."
"Before we walked out on deck today, we talked about what it means to put on that cap and represent this program. It means even more when you get to honor a senior that will be competing at home for the final time. Darby (Coles) has been an incredible presence on our team and has been such a servant leader for our program. Today was just another example of standing up in two events she doesn't typically race and lay it on the line for her teammates."
Junior Raeleigh Mooij, freshman Naomee Miller, freshman Madeline Hart and senior Darby Coles took first place in the 200 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:47.93.
Freshman Paige Banton won the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:05.97.
Freshman Klava Katayama finished first in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 24.44 and won the 100 Yard Butterfly event with a time of 57.99.
Freshman Alaina Laster took first place in the 1 Meter Diving with a final score of 225.61.
