Trophy given annually to the nation’s top men’s and women’s soccer players

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Marshall men's soccer senior Jamil Roberts and redshirt sophomore Milo Yosef were named to the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy watch list, the organization announced Thursday.

The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. The award this year was pushed back to accommodate the seasons that were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The winners will be announced May 27 at the 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy Press Conference and Banquet taking place at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.

Roberts and Yosef were major contributors to the Thundering Herd's championship success in 2019. The two stars combined to score 20 goals, including eight game-winners, and added 13 assists as the Herd ended the year fifth in the nation in total goals (47).

"Glad to see we have two guys representing Marshall Soccer on the Watch list," head coach Chris Grassie said. "It's import for our program for players to be recognized for their talents. It lets the rest of our squad know that if they work hard and perform well they will have a chance at trophies and accolades.

"Milo had a great year in 2019 as a freshman, so the pressure is on him this year to live up to the high standards he set this season.

"It's great to see Jamil recognized because he is at the other extreme. He has worked hard over four years to develop himself, correct his weaknesses, and become the man and player he is today. I'm really happy that he's now receiving recognition for the grit and talent he has shown since arriving here in 2017.

"Hopefully they both live up to and exceed the expectations that this honor places on them."

Roberts finished 2019 ranked sixth in the NCAA in total assists (10) and assists per game (0.56). The Langport, England native led the team and Conference USA in both categories as well, and was second on the team with eight goals and 26 points. His 10 assists tied for the most in a single season in program history. Roberts scored both goals for Marshall at FIU that clinched the No. 1 seed in the C-USA Tournament. He was named All-Conference Second Team and to the United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region First Team. Roberts was most recently drafted in the third round, 77th overall, in the MLS Superdraft by Sporting KC. Roberts has opted to stay at Marshall to play the spring season before moving up to the professional ranks.

Yosef has already piled up numerous awards after his first season with Marshall. The Aachen, Germany native was the 2019 Conference USA Freshman of the Year and Offensive MVP. Yosef garnered All-Region honors as well as becoming the program's first United Soccer Coaches All-American. This season, Yosef was tabbed as the C-USA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. His 12 goals in 2019 were tied for fifth-most in a season in team history and his 27 points were eighth-best.

The Herd kicks off the 2021 spring season on Wednesday, Feb. 3 versus VCU. The match is set for 5 p.m. at Hoops Family Field.
