Senior runner earns recognition
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall cross country senior Josh Endres was honored with the Conference USA Spirit of Service Award, the league announced Wednesday.
Each member school of Conference USA has a winner for three different periods during the year of fall, winter and spring sports. The award honors the league's student-athletes with significant community service endeavors, excellent academic standing and notable athletic achievements.
"Josh has been great here at Marshall," assistant coach Caleb Bowen said. "Aside from his hard work, one key trait about Josh is that he cares for others. Always one to help and nurture others and the work he has done at Robert's Running Store has been huge for this community and I think he is very deserving of this award."
Endres works at Robert's Running Store, a local running shop in which he assists as the store donates shoes and equipment heavily to local children and people in need. He aids through packaging and coordinating proper delivery to those receiving the items.
Particularly during the pandemic, he has helped Robert's organize donations of mini body glides to local Cabell Huntington hospital to help the medical staff with mask chaffing and discomfort. Additionally, he took on a larger role working individually with customers as the store shifted to appointment-only fittings to help customers feel comfortable shopping for shoes for healthy exercise.
During his time at Marshall, Endres has worked local high school and middle school cross country meets as a course official and spotter.
Endres, a native of St. Albans, West Virginia, has competed in 12 meets across his four seasons for the Thundering Herd, including at three Conference USA Cross Country Championships. He was the lone Marshall senior to compete in multiple meets in the shortened 2020 season and set a best collegiate 8K time at the 2019 Evansville Invitational, helping the Herd win the meet with a time of 27:11.9.
Endres is a two-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and majors in clinical exercise physiology with a minor in psychology.
He is the first men's cross country runner to earn the recognition since Will Shaffer did in fall 2016. He is the first honoree from the cross country/track and field program since Samantha Graffius earned the recognition in 2018.
