Women’s Basketball Welcomes Eagles to Cam

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team is back home as the Morehead State Eagles come to town. Tipoff is set for Friday at 6 p.m., and it is Jam The Cam.
Tickets are $1 and can be purchased online by clicking HERE. It has been six years since the two regional foes have faced one another on the court and eight years since Morehead State visited the Cam. Marshall is looking to pack the house with the Herd Faithful.
The Thundering Herd comes into the game at 2-0 while the Eagles are 0-1.

Marshall is off to a 2-0 start this season. After blowing out Bluefield State, 108-45, in the opener, the Herd battled for a tough and hard-fought 68-64 win at Radford on Sunday. Marshall led for the majority of the first half and into the third quarter before the Highlanders came back to take the lead. The home team led by as much as six near the end of the third. The Herd then battled back in the fourth quarter to regain the lead and stay out in front. Marshall took advantage of its free throw opportunities late, going 8-of-10 in the fourth quarter and scoring its final six points from the line over the final 30 seconds.
Senior Aaliyah Dunham had six steals for the second-straight game and totaled 13 points as well as five assists. Graduate student Kennedi Colclough led the Herd in scoring with 17 points. Sophomore Savannah Wheeler finished with 13 points and three assists. Freshman CC Mays also tallied double-digit points with 10 and tied with junior Lorelei Roper for the lead in boards with seven.
Colclough currently leads the team in scoring this season with 16 per game and Dunham is right behind at 15 per contest. Wheeler and Mays are both averaging double-figures as well with 13.5 per game each. Dunham leads in assists with 6.0 per game, the same as her steals average. Mays is the team leader in rebounds with 6.5 per contest.
As a team, the Herd is shooting 46.7-percent from the floor and 37.1-percent from three.
Following the game against the Eagles, Marshall hits the road against Purdue on Monday, Nov. 22. Tipoff from West Lafayette, Ind., is set for 7 p.m.
The Opponent
Morehead State opened the season on the road with a 93-31 loss at Michigan State.
The Eagles were held to single-digits in three of the quarters, only reaching double-figures in the second quarter with 10 points. Meanwhile, the Spartans scored at least 19 points in each period including 26 in the third and fourth quarters. Michigan State led 41-18 at the half and then outscored Morehead State 52-13 in the second half.
The Spartans shot 17-of-28 from three (60.7-percent) and hit 56.5-percent from the floor, including 71.4-percent from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 from three in the fourth quarter. Six players for Michigan State scored in double-figures. Morehead State committed 29 turnovers and shot just 26.5-percent from the floor and 4-of-18 (22.2-percent) from three. The Eagles were outrebounded 31-23.
The Eagles had three players put up seven points in Tyler Moore, Jada Claude and Paris Williams. Moore also led the team with seven rebounds. Morgan Browning tallied three steals in the loss.
Morehead State has a new head coach this season in Cayla Petree. Petree has over 250 total wins in her coaching career with 220 coming on the NJCAA level with great success turning programs around. Her last NCAA head coaching job came at Division II Angelo State, 2013-15, with a record of 23-32.
Only three players out of the 16 on the 2021-22 roster, were with Morehead State in 2020-21, and only two played. Lauren Carter and Moore both played for the Eagles this past season while Freddy Adams sat out with an injury. There are nine transfers and four freshmen along with the three returners suiting up for coach Petree.
The transfers have come from all over the country with Paris Williams (Utah State), Jada Claude (Duke), Kiana Williams (Bethune-Cookman), Alana Denson (Coastal Carolina), Charlette Leurs (Hartford), Aiden Rainford (Radford), Terri Smith (Southeast Missouri State/WKU), Kaitlyn Keathley (Presbyterian) and Julan McDonald (Memphis). Between them, they come with 266 games of experience at other programs.
Following the game at Marshall, Morehead State heads back home for a game against Midway on Sunday, Nov. 21. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
