Postgame Press Conference: Head Coach Tony Kemper
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Marshall women's basketball team battled but suffered its first loss of the season, 70-60, at the Purdue Boilermakers, Monday night from Mackey Arena.
The Thundering Herd falls to 3-1, while Purdue improves to 4-1.
"It was a hard-fought game," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "I thought we competed well enough defensively to win the game. We struggled to rebound with them. (6-6 Ra Shaya) Kyle is really long and she is always around the rim, pretty hard to keep her out of there.
"It kind of came down to where we just needed one rebound in there. We were down four, just got a stop and missed the rebound. But, we had a chance. I thought we executed very well defensively what we wanted to get done. Offensively, we were completely out of sorts. They pushed us out of everything. Hats off to Purdue. They really flipped their pressure and got after us.
"Hard-fought game. Wish it would have been different but hopefully we learn some things."
Graduate student Kennedi Colclough led the Herd with 19 points, her best scoring output in a Marshall uniform since joining the Herd before the 2020-21 season. Senior Brianah Ferby was next with 11 points and sophomore Savannah Wheeler scored 10, including 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Junior Lorelei Roper and freshman CC Mays had six points each. Roper led the Herd with five boards and also had two blocks and a steal.
Senior Aaliyah Dunham had five steals, her third game with the Green & White with at least five thefts. She also scored four points and had two assists. Sophomore Alexis Johnson and freshman Aarionna Redman had two points each. Junior Kia Sivils finished the game with one rebound and one block. Freshman Sarah Liberatore entered the game toward the end of the first and attempted a three, but could not convert.
The Herd shot just under 38-percent from the field, but struggled from distance hitting just one three-pointer. Marshall hit 15-of-18 from the line, good for 83.3-percent. Wheeler and Roper were perfect from the line and Colclough hit 7-of-8. Purdue won the rebounding battle, but only by six despite some size advantage.
Marshall shot nearly 42-percent in the first quarter, but struggled with turnovers committing four. The Herd tied the game twice, at 2-2 on a layup from Colclough and then again at 4-4 on a jumper from Roper. Purdue took the lead from there and held on for the remainder of the game. Roper scored four points, had two rebounds, one block and one steal in an active first.
The Boilermakers continued to lead through the second quarter, however Marshall kept it close. Purdue's largest lead of the period was nine at 23-14 at the 8:12 mark. The Herd did not let the lead get to double-digits as Wheeler hit two free throws and Redman grabbed an offensive rebound and then got the put back to close within five. Marshall brought the deficit down to four, 28-24, on a layup from Colclough with 2:55 to go before the halftime break. Purdue put the lead back to six, and the Herd went in to the locker room trailing 32-26. Colclough scored four points in the second. Wheeler grabbed three rebounds and Dunham nabbed two steals.
Marshall outscored Purdue 17-15 in the third quarter and used some great defensive play from Dunham, as well as the Herd's first three of the game to drop the deficit to four. Marshall trailed by nine with 1:48 to go in the period after two free throws from Purdue. Ferby buried a three from the corner ten seconds later to get within six. Dunham then grabbed a steal with just under a minute to go and found Johnson cutting to the basket in transition for a fast-break layup. Dunham ripped away another steal, her fifth of the game, that halted another Boilermaker possession. Purdue did not score a field goal over the final 2:39, hitting only four free throws to end the period.
The Herd continued to fight in the fourth quarter, however Purdue maintained the lead and was able to take advantage of free throw opportunities to build the lead out to 10 for the final.
The Herd gets back into action on Sunday, Nov. 28, on the road against another Big 10 opponent in Michigan State.
