Women’s Basketball Travels to Michigan State

Tipoff from Breslin Center set for Sunday at 2 p.m.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Marshall women's basketball team is back on the road to take on its second-straight Big Ten opponent, the Michigan State Spartans. Tipoff is set for Sunday at 2 p.m., from the Breslin Center.
The Thundering Herd enters the game at 3-1 overall, while the Spartans are 5-2.

Series History: First ever meeting
Marshall started the season 3-0 before falling at Purdue the last time out on the floor, 70-60. The Herd was able to keep it close throughout the contest despite struggling from three-point range. The Boilermakers took advantage of the free throw opportunities late in the fourth quarter to put the lead out to double-digits.
Graduate student Kennedi Colclough led Marshall in scoring with a season-high 19 points. Senior Brianah Ferby put up 11 points and sophomore Savannah Wheeler scored 10. Wheeler was 6-of-6 from the line and Colclough finished 7-of-8 from the charity stripe.
This season, the Herd has three players averaging double-figures in scoring with Wheeler leading the way with 14.8 points per game. Colclough is second with 14.3 per game and freshman CC Mays is averaging 12.0 per contest. Marshall is shooting 41.9-percent from the field and nearly 80-percent from the free throw line. The Herd has allowed 38.5-percent from the floor.
Senior Aaliyah Dunham continues to be a defensive threat with 18 steals to lead the team. She had six in each of the first two games of the year and five more at Purdue. Dunham leads the Herd in assists as well with 18 total, 4.5 per game.
Marshall has a plus-5.8 advantage in rebounding so far this year. The only time the Herd lost the rebounding battle was at Purdue, and only by six. Marshall has been getting a team effort on the glass with five players averaging four or more per game. Mays leads the team with six boards per game. Junior Lorelei Roper (5.5) and sophomore Alexis Johnson (5.0) are both averaging at least five rebounds per contest. Wheeler and Colclough are both averaging four boards per game.
Following the game at Michigan State, the Herd returns to the Cam Henderson Center for two home games. First Marshall welcomes Wright State on Tuesday, Nov. 30, and then Coppin State on Saturday, Dec. 4.
The Opponent
Michigan State enters the game with a 5-2 record. The Spartans won the first four contests of the season including a 93-31 victory over Morehead State to open the year. Following the four wins, however Michigan State dropped its next two games to Fordham (71-68) and St. Francis Brooklyn (66-63), both on the road. The Spartans did pick up a win in its last game, also on the road, at Oakland, 84-71.
Michigan State shot 54.1-percent from the field and held the Golden Grizzlies to 40.6-percent shooting. Oakland did drain 10 three-pointers. Five players scored in double-figures for the Spartans. Nia Clouden, who leads the team this year at just under 19 points per game, led the squad with 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting. She was also 3-of-6 from distance. Maltida Ekh was next with 17. DeeDee Hagemann was dishing the ball all game long with 10 assists and just one turnover. The Spartans held a slim rebounding advantage, 37 to 34.
So far this season, Michigan State has been outscoring its opponents by 20.5 points per game. The smallest margin of victory was 11 points (73-62) over Valparaiso. As a team, the Spartans are shooting just over 50-percent from the floor, 37.7-percent from three and nearly 78-percent from the line. Three players are averaging double-digits. Following Clouden are Alyza Winston (14.7) and Ekh (11.3). Tamara Farquhar leads in rebounding with 6.0 per game. Clouden leads the team in assists with 36 total, however Hagemann is right behind with 30. The Spartans love to spread the ball around averaging nearly 21 assists per game, good for third in the NCAA.
Head coach Suzy Merchant is in her 15th season at the helm in East Lansing. She earned her 300th win at Michigan State on Nov. 19 with a 100-60 victory over Bryant in the Breslin Center. The 500th overall win of her coaching career was also at home, Nov. 16, in the 73-62 win over Valparaiso.
Following the game against the Herd, the Spartans have a home date against Notre Dame set for Thursday, Dec. 2.
