Led Herd at Grandover Fall Classic
DALLAS – Senior Jackie Schmidt was named Conference USA Women's Golfer of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday. Schmidt led Marshall at the Grandover Fall Classic.
"I'm really proud of Jackie and the hard work she puts in does not go unnoticed," Herd head coach Brooke Burkhammer said. "She is such a great student-athlete and even better teammate. Very proud of her!"
Schmidt earns the first league weekly honor of her career after a great two days on Monday and Tuesday at the Grandover Fall Classic. The Galt, Calif., native finished tied for 14th and kept climbing the leaderboard each round. On a tough course at Grandover East that had seen rain for three-straight days before the event started, Schmidt bounced back after a rough first round to improve her score by four strokes and move up nine spots on the leaderboard after the second round. Schmidt moved up yet again, seven more places on Tuesday in the third round to get into the top 15 out of 71 golfers. She shot par or better on 33 holes and totaled six birdies.
The senior has been working her way back since missing the majority of the 2020-21 season dealing with an injury when she competed in two of the Herd's five events. Schmidt played in all 10 tournaments her freshman season in 2018-19 and had one top 10 finish. She played in five of the Herd's seven tournaments in 2019-20, which ended up seeing the final three events canceled due to COVID. This season Schmidt has competed in all five events and leads the team in stroke average.
She has scored a season-best 73 two times. With her top 15 finish at Grandover, Schmidt has been the team leader in three tournaments with the other two coming at the William & Mary Fall Invitational (Sept. 12-13) and the Butler Fall Invitational (Oct. 4-5) where she had her best place of the season so far finishing tied for 12th.
Off the course, Schmidt is a three-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, two-time WGCA All-American Scholar Athlete and received the C-USA Academic Medal in 2019.
Marshall is done for the fall season and will get back into action in February. The Herd has four tournaments lined up for the spring before heading to the Conference USA Championships. Marshall tees off the spring season at the First Coast Classic on Feb. 14-15. The other events are the River Landing Classic (March 7-8), Golfweek Any Given Tuesday Collegiate (March 28-30) and the Colonel Classic Invite (April 4-5). The Conference USA Championships are set for April 18-20 at the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
