HUNTINGTON, W.Va.
– Marshall Women's Basketball begins its 2021-22 journey with a 6 p.m. ET tip against Bluefield State Tuesday evening in the Cam Henderson Center.

The game will be carried on ESPN+ with Jake Griffith on the call.

Marshall will be led by Savannah Wheeler, who was tabbed a preseason All-Conference USA pick last month, following a stellar sophomore season. A second-team postseason all-league pick a year ago, Wheeler was the Thundering Herd's leading scorer at 17 points per game. That figure was good for the conference's sixth-highest average. She started all 19 games for Marshall last season and made a team-high 36 3-pointers. On the year, she was deadly at the free throw line, connecting on 87.5 percent in league-only tilts, which was the top mark in C-USA (third in all games at 85.3).

She also tied for eighth in the conference last year with seven 20+ point scoring efforts.

The Thundering Herd has also added key pieces to the lineup in Aaliyah Dunham and Brianah Ferby, who have transferred from Xavier and Austin Peay, respectively.

Bluefield State (1-0) opened its season with a 69-53 win at Bluefield University on Thursday.

Junior guard Dani Janutolo led the Big Blue with 18 points, while guard Katrina Davis added 16 with seven rebounds, and Alexus Tucker had nine with nine rebounds. Bluefield State shot 37.5 percent from the field (24 of 64), while Bluefield University shot 40.0 percent (22 of 55).
