Women’s Basketball Set for Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic

Herd to take on Oakland South Point Arena
LAS VEGAS – The Marshall women's basketball team is out west to take on the Oakland Golden Grizzlies at the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic, Dec. 20, at the South Point Arena.
The Herd is scheduled to play Oakland at 8 p.m. eastern, 5 p.m. pacific.
The Thundering Herd enters the event with a 4-4 record. Oakland is 4-5, and will play Bowling Green on Sunday (Dec. 19) before taking on Marshall.

Series History: Oakland, First ever meeting
Last Meeting: vs. Akron – March 1, 2005 in Huntington – Marshall won 65-49
Marshall is coming off an 88-56 win over Alderson Broaddus on Dec. 15, in the Cam Henderson Center. Sophomore Alexis Johnson and freshman Sarah Liberatore came off the bench to have excellent games, and help ignite the Herd to the win. Johnson tied her career-high with 18 points and grabbed seven boards. Liberatore set career-highs with 15 points, four made three-pointers and three rebounds.
Sophomore Savannah Wheeler scored 16 points and the led the team with seven assists. Senior Aaliyah Dunham handed out six assists. It was Marshall's first game with two players dishing out five or more assists each since Feb. 6, 2020 versus Southern Miss.
Wheeler and senior Brianah Ferby are both approaching a major career milestone of 1,000 points. Ferby needs 113 points and Wheeler needs 133. Ferby came to the Herd with 819 during her time with Austin Peay and has scored 68 so far this season. Wheeler has scored 141 points in 2021-22, reaching double-figures in all eight games. The Catlettsburg, Ky., native would be the 23rd member of the Marshall 1,000-Point Club.
The Herd's game against Oakland will be the final non-conference contest of the season. Marshall returns to the court on Dec. 30 against Louisiana Tech in the Cam Henderson Center to begin Conference USA play. The Herd will then face Southern Miss on Jan. 1, also at home.
The Opponent
Golden Grizzlies
Oakland heads to Las Vegas with a 4-5 record and winning two of its last three. The Golden Grizzlies defeated Illinois-Chicago 67-59 on Dec. 2, lost to IUPUI 74-49 on Dec. 4 and then took down Central Michigan 79-58 in its last outing on Dec. 7. Oakland and Marshall share one familiar opponent in Michigan State, as the Golden Grizzlies fell 84-71 on Nov. 26.
Against the Chippewas, Oakland began the game with an 8-point lead (18-10) at the end of the first quarter. The Golden Grizzlies kept the offense rolling in the second quarter, outscoring Central Michigan 24-10 in the period, and taking a 42-20 lead at the half. The Chippewas were 0-of-13 from beyond the arc in the first half and finished the game 3-of-25.
Kahlaijah Dean, who leads the team in every category except for rebounds and blocked shots, scored a season-high 34 points against Central Michigan. She shot 11-of-16 from the field, 4-of-7 from three and was 8-for-8 from the line. The senior guard added seven boards. Breanna Perry, who leads in rebounds and blocks, tallied 13 points, eight boards and three blocks in the win.
Dean leads Oakland in points per game (18.6), minutes per game (31.9), assists (24), steals (22), made field goals (55), field goal attempts (138), three-pointers made (24), three-pointers attempted (70), free throws made (33) and free throws attempted (44). She is also second on the team in rebounds per game with 4.6 as Perry leads with 4.9 per contest. Dean ranks in the top 100 in the NCAA in eight statistical categories and the top 50 in three.
As a team, Oakland is shooting 40.6-percent from the field and 33.3-percent from beyond the arc.
Head coach Jeff Tungate is in his ninth season at the helm and has an overall record of 106-138. He will not be with the team in Las Vegas, taking a medical leave of absence.
