NORFOLK, Va. – The Marshall University men's basketball team (9-5, 3-4 C-USA) fell in Norfolk, 82-81, on Friday night as the Old Dominion University Monarchs (9-4, 5-2 C-USA) rallied from a double-digit deficit at Chartway Arena.
"They got too many easy shots in the lane," Marshall head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the loss. "They bullied us up on the inside and we've got to respond better."
Junior guard Taevion Kinsey led the way with a game-high 22 points on an 8-for-13 shooting night, making his lone three-point attempt and draining five of his seven free-throw attempts. Freshman forward Obinna Anochili-Killen collected 16 points making five of his six attempts from the field. Senior forward Mikel Beyers closed out a trio of Herd in double-figure scoring with 13 points.
Redshirt senior forward Jannson Williams blocked a game-high five shots and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Senior guard Jarrod West dished out a game-high 10 assists and had a game-high three steals.
ODU started the game by scoring the first four points. However, the Herd quickly tied the game as the two sides began to trade baskets as the score was tied 12-12 just over five minutes into the contest.
MU then went on an 8-2 run with points on a West layup, a Kinsey jumper and Beyers with a dunk and a pair of free throws to lead by six, 20-14, with 10:22 on the clock.
The Herd slowly added to its lead and after a three-point basket by Williams and a fast break layup by Kinsey, grabbed its first double-digit lead of the half, 34-24, with 3:30 left in the opening stanza.
The Green and White closed out the half on fire as a West three, a free-throw from Darius George and a layup near the buzzer by Beyers gave Marshall a 42-28 advantage at the break. It was Marshall's largest lead of the half.
Marshall picked up right where it left off in the second half as it outscored ODU 14-7 in the first three minutes and after threes by Williams and Kinsey put it up by 21 points, 56-35. Its largest lead of the game.
However, ODU caught fire after the Herd took the 21-point lead. The Monarchs used runs of 13-0 and 11-0 with a few points in-between to tie the contest, 61-61, with 10:05 left in the game.
MU held the lead or kept the game tied for the next 1:45 until ODU took its first lead, 67-66, since 17:01 in the first half at the 8:20 mark in the second half.
Down by six with 2:55 on the clock, the Green and White was not prepared to go down without a fight. Kinsey had a lay-in to cut it to four. He followed that up with a jumper to cut the deficit to two, 80-78, with 2:01 on the clock. 37 seconds later Taylor nailed a three to put the Herd back on top, 81-80, with 84 ticks left in the game.
Kalu Ezikpe threw down a dunk for ODU 1:03 left in the game to put it up by one as the Herd trailed 82-81. Both teams struggled to put the ball in the hoop down the stretch as a deep three-point attempt by David Early missed the mark as ODU took the contest.
