Herd Men’s Basketball Dominates ODU in Road Win on Saturday

NORFOLK, Va. – The Marshall University Thundering Herd men's basketball team (10-5, 4-4 C-USA) came back with a vengeance to split its road weekend with Old Dominion Monarchs (9-5, 5-3 C-USA) with an 87-67 win on Saturday night at Chartway Arena.
"We made our presence known inside," Marshall head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the win. "They (Marshall) were getting bully-balled last night, it was a good effort tonight."
Redshirt sophomore Andrew Taylor and senior Jarrod West tied for the game-high in points with 18. Taylor added a game-high eight assists and a team-high seven rebounds to his stat line as West drilled five of his six attempts from behind the arc and had six assists.
Junior guard Taevion Kinsey followed them up with 17 points in the contest. The Columbus, Ohio, native went an impressive 8-for-11 from the field in the win.
Sophomore Goran Miladinovic nearly recorded a double-double in just 13 minutes on the court by scoring 10 points and grabbing eight rebounds.
ODU scored the first points of the game with a three, but Marshall answered by putting eight of the next 10 points through the hoop to lead 8-5 three minutes into the game.
The Monarchs put together a 4-0 run of its own to pull within one, 11-10, three minutes later. After the teams traded baskets, Marshall used a 7-0 run with a layup from West and five consecutive points from Mikel Beyers to go up 23-14.
Kinsey, West and Taylor combined for another 7-0 MU run to extend its lead to double-digits, 32-18, with 7:34 left in the opening stanza.
After a Monarch dunk, Marshall scored 16 of the next 22 points to put its lead to 22, 48-26, with just under three minutes remaining in the half. ODU scored the last four points before the break, but the Green and White led 48-30 as the teams went to the locker room.
Old Dominion scored the first point of the second half, but Marshall scored the next five, including four by Obinna Anochili-Killen, to go up 53-31.
Jannson Williams came up with a block at the 15:53 mark.
The two sides then traded baskets and runs across the next three minutes, but Taylor nailed a pair of threes and a two-point jump shot for an 8-0 MU run to go up by 30, 68-38, at the 11:19 mark and force an ODU timeout.
Out of the timeout, the Monarchs made a jumper, but West and Beyers threes followed giving MU its largest lead of the contest at 34 points, 74-40, with 11:19 left in the game.
ODU chipped away at the MU lead in the final 10 minutes, but Marshall hung on for the 87-67 victory.
NOTES
D'Antoni recorded his 123rd victory at Marshall.
Williams' block tied Hassan Whiteside for the program record at 182.
West and Taylor have each led or tied for the lead in scoring for the Herd three times this season.
Miladinovic scored all 10 of his points in the final 10:31 of the contest for his third double-digit scoring effort of the season.
Marshall assisted on 22 of its 33 made shots from the field.
The Herd converted 14 points off nine forced turnovers, while giving up just seven points on 10 turnovers.
MU was outrebounded by ODU by one board tonight, 41-40.
Marshall is 5-0 when it has four players score 10 or more points and is 8-2 when scoring at least 80 points.
UP NEXT
The Herd is scheduled for its first home games since Jan. 17 as it prepares for Middle Tennessee on Feb. 12 and Feb. 13 at the Cam Henderson Center.
