HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The 11th-ranked Marshall men's soccer team defeated the (RV) FIU Panthers in overtime on Saturday at Hoops Family Field. Junior defender Nathan Dossantos headed in the golden goal in the 92nd minute.

The Thundering Herd improved to 5-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in Conference USA. The Panthers fall to 2-2-0 and 1-1-0 in league play.

"I think it was a good game from the boys," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "We had our game plan and it worked perfectly. We had tons of shots and created a lot of chances and their keeper stood on his head for a little bit which was frustrating, but we knew it was coming, it was just a matter of time really before we broke them down.

"I felt today, overall was our best performance of the season. FIU has some good players, but I think man-to-man we dealt with that pretty well. We stayed on top of them for the entire match really. The back line had to deal with some counterattacks and I thought they were just tremendous in killing the space and closing their man down when they needed to. (Oliver Semmle) didn't have too much to do and obviously Nate (Dossantos) had a fantastic performance today and he gets the winning goal. Which is fully deserved and would love to see him get some plaudits from that for player of the week."

For Dossantos, the game-winner was his first goal in a Thundering Herd uniform and the second of his collegiate career. He scored one goal his freshman year at Duquesne against George Mason.

Marshall dominated possession in the contest, spending the majority of the match in its attacking third. The Herd outshot the Panthers 28-6 and 15-2 in shots on goal. Marshall had numerous opportunities, however FIU's goalkeeper Johan Penaranda always seemed to be there, tallying 14 saves.

The Herd's defense played a spectacular match in limiting FIU's attack. Dossantos and redshirt junior Collin Mocyunas directed the Herd's defensive effort as the Panthers only two shots on goal were easy saves for junior goalkeeper Oliver Semmle, with one save in each half.

The match was physical from the start as the teams combined for 32 total fouls. FIU was tabbed for five yellow cards and Mauro Bravo picked up his second yellow, which led to a red card, with just 50 seconds remaining in regulation. The Panthers played the remainder of the match a man down.

In the first half, Marshall fired off 10 shots with four on goal. FIU managed just two shots and one on goal, with Semmle making the save in the 37th minute. Junior Noah Raphael fired a shot from about 25 yards out with seconds left on the clock that just went high over the crossbar. After the first 45 minutes, the teams went back to locker rooms scoreless.

Marshall turned up the pressure even more in the second half with 17 totals shots and 10 on goal. Penaranda made some great saves to keep FIU in the match as the Herd spent the majority of the time again on the attacking side.

Right after the red card that sent Bravo off the pitch, the Herd charged ahead to try and get a last second goal before the horn. FIU sent a ball out of bounds beyond the end line with just seconds remaining. Sophomore Gabriel Alves quickly lined up to attempt a corner kick, Marshall's 10th of the match, that the Panther's defense was able to stop and force the contest to overtime.

The Herd jumped right into attack mode in overtime. Another ball over the end line by FIU gave Marshall the chance for the corner kick, just about 90 seconds in to the extra period. Junior Jan-Erik Leinhos lined up from the far corner, fired in a kick toward the far side of the goal which deflected off the head of junior Pedro Dolabella across the box to the near side of the net where Dossantos went low to head the ball in for the game-winner. Leinhos and Dolabella each collected their third assists of the season.

The Herd returns to action on Thursday, March 18, at No. 10 Kentucky. The clash of the two ranked squads is scheduled for a 5 p.m. kickoff from Lexington, Ky.
