HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall softball team split the doubleheader with the Bellarmine Knights on Saturday at Dot Hicks Field. The Herd dropped game one, 3-1, and then won game two, 5-3.
The Thundering Herd is now 10-4 while the Knights move to 5-17.
In game two, a home run from graduate Sierra Huerta in the first inning was the 150th homer hit by Marshall during the head coach Megan Smith Lyon era. Coach Smith Lyon has been with the Herd for just 103 games, an average of 1.46 home runs per game. The victory in game two was also the 70th for coach Smith Lyon at Marshall.
Game three is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans can tune in on HerdVision/CUSAtv with Scott Hall, or with Marshall radio on 88.1 WMUL-FM and online www.marshall.edu/wmul.
Game One: Bellarmine 3, Marshall 1
The Herd struggled to find its rhythm offensively in game one, collecting just five hits. Four were doubles making it four-straight games that Marshall has hit at least four doubles and seven-straight contests with at least one double. However, the Herd could not string together the timely hits to take advantage.
The Knights scored first in the top of the third. Marshall tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Madison Whitaker led off the inning with the Herd's third double of the game. Senior Armani Brown came in to run at second, then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from redshirt senior Blakely Burch. Junior Grace Chelemen drove in Brown with a single to right field.
Bellarmine went ahead in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run, then held on in the bottom of the inning.
Senior Aly Harrell, freshman Kat Sackett and Chelemen had the other doubles for Marshall. Chelemen finished the game with two hits. Sackett now leads the team with six doubles this season and has started her collegiate career with an extra base hit in five-straight contests, tied for the second-longest streak in program history. Sackett also joined fellow freshman Paige Halliwill as the only players in team history to begin their careers with an extra base hit in five-straight contests.
Redshirt sophomore Cailey Joyce pitched all seven innings for Marshall. She allowed six hits, three runs and struck out seven. Joyce did also receive some great plays from her defense. Halliwill made a diving catch in the first inning. In the seventh, Halliwill had another diving effort that just missed. However, she quickly got up, threw the ball back to Huerta just out in shallow left-center, who then turned and fired for Burch at third as the runner attempted to pull out a triple. The relay made it in time as the runner was out.
Game Two: Marshall 5, Bellarmine 3
The Herd saw a little increase in offensive production at the right moments in taking game two. Grace Chelemen, who was moved into the leadoff position for the second game, legged out an infield single for the first of four hits for the junior outfielder. With Chelemen at first, Sierra Huerta blasted a high-arcing shot out to left for a 2-run homer. Along with being home run No. 150 in the coach Smith Lyon tenure, it was the fourth of the season for Huerta and 22nd of her career. The shortstop is now 12th all-time in team history. It was also the 23rd home run of the season for Marshall.
The Knights scored three runs in the top of the third to take a one-run lead, 3-2. The Herd responded in the bottom of the inning as Kat Sackett drove in Chelemen with a sacrifice fly to center.
Marshall scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. With two outs, and Armani Brown at first, freshman Kay Kay Kenney in her first career start reached on an error that allowed Brown to advance to third. Blakely Burch then hit a high-chopper up the middle scoring Brown to give the Herd the lead. Chelemen then stepped to the plate and delivered her fourth hit of the game that plated Kenney. Marshall held on in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
Sophomore Ashley Blessin received the start in the circle and pitched the first three innings. Blessin allowed two hits, three runs and struck out one. Senior Megan Stauffer entered in the fourth and pitched into the sixth allowing two hits, no runs and one strikeout. Senior Laney Jones came on in the sixth, recorded the last two outs and pitched the seventh. Jones earned the win and tallied two strikeouts as well.
The Herd defense turned in more great defensive plays as Burch made a diving grab in the first inning. Brown started a double play in the fifth, catching a liner and then quickly flipping to Aly Harrell at first to double-up the runner. Burch and Huerta combined for nine assists on the left side of the infield. Burch had a career-best six assists, tied for third most in a game since 2000 in team history.
Chelemen ended the doubleheader day combining to go 6-of-7 at the plate, score two runs and drove in two. The Woodhaven, Mich., native's 4-for-4 performance in game two was a career-high. The Herd collected eight hits in the second game. Huerta had two, with Burch and Paige Halliwill adding one each. Kenney drew two walks in her first two collegiate plate appearances before reaching on the error in the sixth.
