Earned both wins over the weekend for Herd
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall softball senior pitcher Laney Jones was named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced Monday.
Â
She was previously named Pitcher of the Week back on March 8.
Â
Jones picked up both wins for Marshall over the weekend in the three-game series with the Bellarmine Knights. She entered game two in relief in the top of the sixth inning with the game tied at 3-3, one out and two runners on base. Jones promptly recorded the next two outs with a pop out to freshman catcher Kat Sackett and then a fly out to freshman centerfielder Paige Halliwill for the third out, stranding both runners on base.
Â
The Herd took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, 5-3. Jones and the defense came back out in the top of the seventh and held on for the win. One batter reached base, however Jones retired two Knights with strikeouts and then a ground out to senior Armani Brown at second for the final out. Jones retired five of the six batters she faced.
Â
On Sunday, Jones earned the start and pitched all five innings as Marshall won 10-0. The Doylestown, Ohio native picked up her fourth win of the season and third shutout as well. Jones faced 19 batters and only four reached base, and she took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. After the two hits in the fifth, Jones jumped in with the defense during a run-down that kept a run off the board and preserved the shutout, as she applied the tag on the runner caught between third and home. The senior pitcher then induced a pop up to senior Madison Whitaker at shortstop for the final out and the run-rule victory. Jones received great defensive effort through both outings.
Â
Jones finished the weekend with 6.2 innings pitched, a 0.00 ERA, allowed just two hits and struck out three. Her season ERA improved from 2.95 to 2.25 following the weekend. Jones is now 4-1 this season and leads the Herd with 28 innings pitched and 19 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting just .186 against her.
Â
Marshall softball returns to the field Thursday through Saturday, April 1-3, at home against the WKU Hilltoppers for the C-USA-opener for both programs.
