COLUMBIA, S.C. – The 12th-ranked Marshall men's soccer team opened Conference USA play with a 2-0 victory at the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday. Junior Vitor Dias added to his team lead, now at six goals, scoring both goals for the Herd.

The Thundering Herd improves to 4-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in conference action. The Gamecocks fall to 6-4-0 and 0-1-0 in league play.

"I thought we were just okay today," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "I think we possessed the ball well at times, but overall, our rhythm in possessions needs to improve. We did very well defensively! Our back four has really started to gel and for the majority we were very difficult to break down from front to back. A good team defensive performance. Vitor Dias has begun to score more goals. He's extremely talented, so great to see him start adding that to his game. Overall, I'm very happy that we can get the first three points on the board."

The two teams played out a scoreless first half. Marshall outshot South Carolina 6-0 in the first 45 minutes, however none of the shots were on goal.

In the second half, Dias came through for the Herd. The junior took just two shots in the contest, but made both count. Dias scored the first goal in the 55th minute off a pass from senior Pedro Dolabella. Dias added his second goal of the match in the 68th minute. It was the fourth match that Dias has found the back of the net and his second contest scoring two goals.

The Marshall defense finished off the rest of the match as South Carolina got aggressive to try and get on the scoreboard. Marshall outshot the Gamecocks 9-6 in the second half, however just one was on goal for South Carolina. Junior goalkeeper Oliver Semmle was there for the save as he earned his third win of the season.

Senior Jamil Roberts and redshirt sophomore Milo Yosef kept up the offensive pressure on the South Carolina defense throughout the day with four shots each. Along with Semmle, five players for Marshall played all 90 minutes and were key contributors to the defensive effort. Juniors Nathan Dossantos and Jan-Erik Leinhos, redshirt junior Collin Mocyunas, and sophomores Gabriel Alves and Max Schneider played the entire match.

The Herd returns to Hoops Family Field on Saturday, March 13 at 2 p.m., as the FIU Panthers come to Huntington for a Conference USA match.
