No. 11 Men’s Soccer Welcomes (RV) FIU to Hoops Family Field

Conference USA match set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The 11th-ranked Marshall men's soccer team returns to Hoops Family Field on Saturday to take on the (RV) FIU Panthers. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Thundering Herd comes in at 4-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in Conference USA play. The Panthers come in at 2-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in C-USA action.

The Herd came out victorious in its first C-USA match of the season, 2-0, over the Gamecocks. Junior Vitor Dias continued his great season scoring both goals for Marshall, with an assist from senior Pedro Dolabella on the first.
Marshall outshot South Carolina 15-6 and allowed just one shot on goal as the defense stifled the Gamecock's attack.
Dias leads the Herd and C-USA in scoring with six goals and 14 points. The junior has scored in four of Marshall's six matches, and has netted two goals in two contests with the first coming against West Virginia Tech. Dias has been efficient when taking his shots this year as he has taken 11 total shots with eight on goal, and six finding the back of the net. He also has two assists.
Junior Jan-Erik Leinhos is second on the team in scoring with three goals and two assists. Two of his goals have come on successful penalty kicks. Redshirt sophomore Milo Yosef leads the Herd in shots with 22 and 11 on goal. Yosef has netted two goals and has one assist. Senior Jamil Roberts has one goal and two assists. Roberts has 17 assists in his Marshall career, good for third all-time in program history. His next assist will put him into a tie with Ryan LaPointe (1989-93) for second all-time.
The Herd has been putting the pressure on its opponents, outshooting the competition 106-28 and 47-9 on goal. Marshall has outscored the opposition 17-4 through the first six matches.
Junior goalkeeper Oliver Semmle through 523 minutes of action this season has faced just 26 total shots and eight on goal. Semmle has five saves and allowed three goals. He sports a 0.52 goals against average, good for third in league and 39th in the NCAA.
The Opponent
FIU has opened the season 2-1 with wins over Florida Gulf Coast and Florida Atlantic. The lone loss was a 1-0 decision vs. North Florida.
The Panthers are looking to replace two of its top scorers from 2019 in Andrew Booth (five goals, five assists) and Caleb Franke (five goals). The top returning scorer is Alessandro Campoy (six goals, two assists in 2019) who has two goals to lead the team in 2021. Three other players have scored one goal each and Anthony Cousins Jr., leads the Panthers in assists with two.
FIU has outshot its opponents by one, 34-33, and trails in shots on goal, 17-9.
The Panthers are also looking to replace departed senior goalkeeper Daniel Gagliardi who played every minute in the net in 2019, totaling 67 saves and a goals against average of 0.93. Two players have split time in goal in 2021 with Johan Penaranda with 180 minutes and Grant Makela with 90 minutes. Penaranda has allowed one goal, has eight saves, a 0.50 goals against average and a .889 save percentage. Makela has allowed two goals, recorded six saves, a 2.00 goals against average and a .750 save percentage.
