MIAMI, Fla. – The Marshall softball team hammered out a 7-3 win over the FIU Panthers on Sunday. The Herd recorded eight extra base hits to take the series at Felsburg Field.

The Thundering Herd improves to 18-9 overall and 7-5 in Conference USA. The Panthers drop to 12-21 overall and 4-8 in conference.

The Marshall bats tallied 11 total hits with five doubles and three home runs. The Herd's five doubles were one away from tying the team record. As a team, Marshall slugged .862 in the contest.

The Herd now has 43 home runs, an average of 1.59 per game, and 55 doubles, an average of 1.90 per contest.

Senior Aly Harrell hit the first double of the day to lead off the game, and then graduate Sierra Huerta hit another double to lead off the second. However, Marshall was still held off the scoreboard.

The Panthers scored one run in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead. The Herd responded in the top of the third with four runs. With one out, Harrell was walked and then senior Saige Pye launched a two-run home run to right-center for her fifth homer of the year. Following the blast, Marshall recorded its only singles of the game. Junior Mya Stevenson singled down the left field line, then senior Katie Adams singled up the middle. Huerta was hit by a pitch, the 44th of her career, to load the bases. After a pitching change, junior Grace Chelemen hit a single to center that scored both Stevenson and Adams.

The Herd led 4-1.

FIU scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut Marshall's lead down to one, 4-3. The Herd answered in a big way in the top of the seventh to steal back the momentum.

Stevenson led off the inning with the Herd's fifth double of the contest and her sixth of the weekend. Adams then came through clutch blasting a 2-run home run out to right. Three batters later, with two outs, Sackett sent one out to right in a hurry for a solo homer. Adams hit her second of the year and Sackett now has five home runs.

Senior pitcher Megan Stauffer and the Marshall Defense retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.

Pye, Stevenson, Adams and Sackett all had two hits. Harrell reached base safely all four times to the plate with a double, one walk and two hit-by-pitches bringing her season on-base percentage up to .516. Huerta reached base three times with a double, a walk and one hit-by-pitch. Chelemen finished with one hit and two RBI. Pye and Adams had two RBI each as well.

Redshirt sophomore Cailey Joyce had the start and earned the win pitching five innings, allowing six hits and three runs with one strikeouts. Joyce improved to 5-2 for the year. Stauffer pitched the final two innings and did not allow a hit or a run, had one walk and one strikeout.

Marshall returns to the field, May 7-9, at Charlotte for the regular season finale. The four-game series begins with a single game on Friday, May 7, at 5 p.m.
