Herd with an All-American in back-to-back years
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Marshall men's soccer junior midfielder Vitor Dias added another honor to his incredible season as he was named a United Soccer Coaches First Team All-American, the organization announced on Thursday. Dias continues to be honored on a national level while his skills have been showcased on the national stage.
Â
Dias is the second All-American in program history and the first to be named to the first team. Teammate Milo Yosef was honored as a second team All-American selection in 2019.
Â
This season alone, Dias was named Conference USA Player of the Year, Offensive MVP, Co-Midfielder of the Year, First Team All-Conference, a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist and All-Southeast Region First Team.
Â
Dias leads the Herd in scoring this year with six goals and 17 points. He is tied for the team lead with five assists. The Brasilia, Brazil native is a magician on the pitch with his footwork and ball-handling skills which were on full display when Marshall scored in the 70th minute against Georgetown in the Elite 8. Starting in the middle of the field, Dias went to his right and passed back to a teammate, who then directed a pass back to Dias on the right side of the 18-yard box. He then dribbled down to the back of the six-yard box by the end line, evading defenders. Dias sent a pass that deflected off a Hoya defender to the left side where Jamil Roberts tapped it in.
Â
In the Sweet 16, Dias fired in the final penalty kick to defeat No. 1 Clemson. The match was tied at 1-1 throughout all 110 minutes and then entered the PK shootout. After Olive Semmle made a great save to keep things tied at 6-6, that opened the door for Dias who blasted a left-footed shot to the far side and the celebration ensued.
Â
It has been a career year for the junior and it is not over yet for Dias and his teammates who play in the Final Four at the College Cup, with their sights set on a National Championship.
Â
The Herd plays No. 16 North Carolina on Friday at 6 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ESPNU.
