Series History: First ever meeting
The Thundering Herd enters the Championship with an overall record of 12-2-3. The Herd has defeated No. 23 Fordham 2-1 in overtime, knocked off No. 1 Clemson in a penalty kick shootout, taken down the defending National Champions No. 8 Georgetown 1-0 and then shutout No. 16 North Carolina 1-0 to advance to the Title match. Marshall is just the fourth unseeded team since the 16-team seed era (2003-present) to make the final. Marshall is ranked No. 10, however only eight teams were seeded this season with the reduced field due to the pandemic. The Herd is also the first member team in Conference USA history to play for a men's National Championship.
The Hoosiers come in with an overall record of 12-1-2 and won the Big 10 Title. Indiana defeated St. Francis Brooklyn on PKs in the second round, defeated No. 19 Marquette 2-1, won 2-0 over No. 6 Seton Hall and then knocked off No. 2 Pittsburgh 1-0 in the Final Four to move on to its 15th College Cup Final. The Hoosiers have won eight National Championships with the last one coming in 2012.
In just four short seasons, head coach Chris Grassie has taken a Marshall program that did not play in the 2016 Conference USA Tournament to back-to-back C-USA Titles, back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament, national rankings and now a chance at the College Cup National Championship.
Last Time Out: Marshall 1, North Carolina 0, Final Four
The Marshall Thundering Herd delivered its NCAA-leading 10th shutout of the season, taking down the 16th-ranked Tar Heels 1-0 in the Final Four. It was the Herd's first ever trip to the College Cup and the team did not appear to be rattled by the big stage.
Marshall out-possessed UNC on the ball, 52-percent to 48-percent, as the Herd's defense continued to move the ball around the back line making the Tar Heels chase. North Carolina did outshoot Marshall 11-1, however junior goalkeeper Oliver Semmle stopped all five shots that were on goal, good for a season-high, and the Herd made the one shot count.
In the 60th minute, redshirt sophomore Milo Yosef received a pass and dribbled into the 18-yard box on the right side. Yosef that sent a cross, that was touched briefly by junior Vitor Dias who also walled off a defender from the ball, and then the pass found its way to the left side where senior Jamil Roberts knocked it through the keeper's legs for what proved to be the game-winner.
The Herd's defense played very well down the stretch as UNC managed just one shot on goal in the second half that was stopped by Semmle in the 81st minute. The C-USA Goalkeeper of the Year earned his 10th shutout of the season, setting a new Marshall single season record.
Roberts scored his second goal of this NCAA Postseason, his fourth NCAA Tourney goal of his career, and his fourth score of the year. Dias tallied his team-leading sixth assist of the year and Yosef picked up his fourth assist.
Marshall has outscored its opponents 29-8 this season and outshot the competition 255-110 and 112-33 on goal. The Herd's opponents are averaging just 1.94 shots on goal per match this year as the defense has been very stingy allowing just 0.448 goals per game, fourth in the NCAA.
