Dossantos named Scholar All-American
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A trio of players for the National Champion Marshall men's soccer team picked up United Soccer Coaches Scholar awards, the organization announced on Thursday.
Junior Nathan Dossantos, senior Pedro Dolabella and redshirt junior Collin Mocyunas were named to the Scholar All-Region team. Dossantos also earned Scholar All-America Second Team honors.
Dossantos is just the second player in program history to be named a Scholar All-American as Illal Osmanu was the first in 2019, also honored on the second team. Dossantos also earns his first Scholar All-Region, as well as Scholar All-America, awards in his career. The Oakville, Ontario, Canada native sports a 3.53 overall grade point average as a political science major. Dossantos transferred to Marshall after spending two years at Duquesne and jumped right into a starting role at center back. He helped lead a stingy Marshall defense that led the nation in shutouts with 11, allowed just eight goals and even had three matches where the opponent did not manage a shot on goal. Dossantos was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week three times and earned First Team All-Conference recognition. The talented defender helped on the attack as well with two assists and scored the golden goal in the 92nd minute against FIU at home.
Dolabella repeated as a Scholar All-Region pick, also earning the award in 2019. He is the first player in program history to earn the distinction twice. Dolabella finished his undergraduate degree in business with a 3.80 grade point average and is working toward his MBA. The Brasilia, Brazil native has been a major factor in the rise of the men's soccer program under head coach Chris Grassie as Dolabella came in as a freshman in Grassie's first season in 2017. Dolabella scored the game-winning, golden goal against Charlotte to give the Herd its first C-USA Title in 2019 and was named Tournament Offensive MVP. This season, he started and appeared in 16 matches with one goal and three assists. Dolabella was named Second Team All-Conference and was a Senior CLASS Award candidate. The tall, rangy midfielder helped Marshall on its historic run through the NCAA Tournament with its ball-control tempo and raised the National Championship Trophy.
Mocyunas earned his way into a starting role after initially joining the team as a walk-on in 2017 and redshirting that season. The Morgantown, W.Va., native began fighting his way into the lineup with 10 starts in 2018, 12 more in 2019 and then becoming a full-time starting center back this year. Mocyunas sports a 3.51 grade point average as a criminal justice major and will soon be graduating and working toward his master's degree while continuing to star for the Herd. He teamed with Dossantos in the middle of the back line that led the nation in shutouts and allowed just 34 shots on goal in 18 matches (1.89 per game). He appeared in all 18 contests with 17 starts and logged a career-high 1,605 minutes. Mocyunas was named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week on March 23 and earned Second Team All-Conference honors.
