JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Marshall track and field's Ashonti Warner competed Saturday night in the 2021 NCAA East Preliminary Round Quarterfinals, hosted by the University of North Florida at Hodges Stadium.
Warner finished 20th out of 24 athletes in the 400 meter hurdles quarterfinals with a time of 59.22. She qualified for the event based on her school record time of 58.91 Thursday in the first round.
She would have had to finish in the top-three in her heat or have among the next three best times to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships next week in Oregon.
"Ashonti has come so far since her freshman season, her performances have been phenomenal," head coach Jeff Small said. "She made it to the first round as a freshman and now the quarterfinals as a sophomore. I definitely see her continuing to improve next year.
"I'm really proud of our entire team and of our coaching staff," Small said. "We broke at least one school record, sometimes multiple records, at every meet this outdoor season which I have never seen before. We will definitely miss our seniors but we have a very young group of great athletes in all our event areas so I believe that the future will be bright."
In an unprecedented season, between the indoor and outdoor seasons, Marshall track and field athletes earned one Conference USA event championship, 10 all-conference honors and four spots in the NCAA East Prelims. Seven new school records were set during the 2021 season.
UP NEXT
The end of the meet concludes all competition for Marshall University Athletics during the 2020-21 school year. The Thundering Herd track and field/cross country program resumes in August for cross country.
