IRVING, Texas – Marshall women's golf junior Torren Kalaskey was honored with the Conference USA Spirit of Service Award, the league office announced Tuesday.

Each member school of Conference USA has a winner for three different periods during the year of fall, winter and spring sports. The spring sports for 2021 include baseball, men's and women's golf, softball, outdoor track & field, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's soccer and volleyball. The award honors the league's student-athletes with significant community service endeavors, excellent academic standing and notable athletic achievements.

"I have enjoyed every moment I've spent giving back and interacting with the community," Kalaskey said. "That does so much for me, and I look forward to doing more in the future."

"I'm extremely proud of Torren for receiving this award and being someone willing to serve others," Herd women's golf head coach Brooke Burkhammer said. "She has such a big heart and I am thankful to have her on this team."

Kalaskey has been heavily involved on and off the course. She is Marshall's President of the Student Athlete Association Committee (SAAC) in 2020-21 organizing monthly meetings and managing the social media presence. Kalaskey organized Suicide Prevention training for student athletes and athletic advisors, participated in C-USA Mental Health Awareness and Diversity & Inclusion movements via social media and a member of the C-USA SAAC Health and Safety Working group.

Prior to serving as the SAAC President, she had volunteered with the committee and organized Habitat for Humanity projects, managed and delivered no-sew blanket and Christmas card donation for children at Cabell Huntington Children's Hospital. Kalaskey also helped arrange "A Night to Shine" which allows those with special needs to have an unforgettable prom experience.

Along with her work with SAAC, Kalaskey has served with the Sweetheart Clinic, helped restore Spotted Salamander Trail in Kanawha State Forest, worked with the Special Olympics, has done Read to Me Days, sold Christmas trees for the Big Brother-Big Sister Foundation, and assisted in Dog Adoption Convention for the Huntington Animal Shelter. The Charleston, W.Va., native has also taught many young kids how to golf and teaching them life lessons through the game of golf.

With all of her volunteer and community work, Kalaskey competed in all five of the Herd's events this spring. She scored a season-best 2-over 74 in the second round of the Conference USA Championships. She has also been a star in the classroom as well as a three-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, a three-time recipient of the Academic Medal for a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or better all as a biological science major with a concentration on cell, molecular and medical. She also has three minors in chemistry, creative writing and psychology.
