Herd Welcomes Panthers for Thursday Tilt

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team will be back in the Henderson Center Thursday evening with FIU comes calling for a 6 p.m. tip. Admission is $5.
The Thundering Herd enters the game with a 9-5 overall record and 4-1 in Conference USA play. The Panthers also come in at 9-5, but sport a 1-2 league mark.
The first 50 students at Thursday's game will get a free scoop of Austin's Homemade Ice Cream. The doors open at 5 p.m. and all students should use the upper-level doors that face the tennis courts.
The first 200 fans will receive a Marshall-themed drawstring bag. Posters will also be available on the concourse of the Henderson Center.

Marshall is coming off a 66-53 triumph at Rice on Saturday in Tudor Fieldhouse.
Aaliyah Duham led the visitors with a superb bounceback offensive effort, scoring a game-high 17 points on 5-for-8 shooting and 3-for-4 from 3-point range. She also had a game-best seven assists. The South Charleston, W.Va. native came into the game making just one of her last 15 from the field. Kennedi Colclough posted 16 points (7-for-14 on FGs) with three steals and Savannah Wheeler was held to 5-for-18 shooting (0-for-6 on triples), but managed 13 points. The Catlettsburg, Kentucky native converted a three-point play at the end of the first half to become Marshall's 23rd 1,000-point scorer.
Lorelei Roper added seven rebounds and helped limit the Owls' leading scorer Ashlee Austin (16 ppg.) to nine points and nine turnovers in just under 28 minutes of action.
Rice's Destiny Jackson was the only Owl in double figures with a team-high 10 points and nine rebounds. Trinity Gooden led the way in assists with four and India Bellamy added three blocks.
The Owls took command early, building a 13-point lead (19-6) on a Haylee Swayze triple at the 2:57 mark of the first quarter. Swayze swished three 3-pointers in the first quarter, but was shut down by the Thundering Herd after that.
Rice led 39-35 at halftime and 50-45 through three quarters, but that's when Marshall grabbed control and never looked back. Thundering Herd ripped off a 17-0 run and didn't allow a Rice point until Jackson made a layup with 3:37 left. By then, though, Marshall had a double-digit lead and the Owls were not able to mount a challenge over the balance of the contest.
The Thundering Herd's defensive intensity was evident throughout the game as MU forced 23 Rice turnovers and cashed in those miscues for 32 points. The Herd also led 36-24 on points in the paint and 17-5 on the fast break.
The Opponent
The Panthers had two non-conference games get canceled and two league contests postponed due to COVID. A makeup date for FIU at Charlotte, originally scheduled for January 1, was set for January 17 but had to be postponed again due to a winter storm.
The Panthers started C-USA play with a 63-51 loss against WKU and a 65-56 loss to UAB. FIU then pulled out a 56-54 overtime win over Middle Tennessee on Saturday. The Blue Raiders managed to tie the game at 49-all with 33 seconds remaining in regulation. The teams were tied again at 54 with 2:19 to go in OT. Finally, with four seconds remaining, FIU's Tanajah Hayes was fouled and she converted both free throws. Middle Tennessee missed a three-pointer at the buzzer. Kyla Nelson led the Panthers with 17 points, four assists and six rebounds. Zaida Gonzalez had 11 points and five boards.
Nelson leads the team in scoring with 13.2 points per game. She is 40th in the nation in three-pointers made per game (2.64) and leads the league in three-point field goal percentage at .378 (37-of-98). Ariel Colon is second in scoring with 11.9 per game. The Panthers are third in the league with 6.93 three-pointers made per game.
FIU is last in C-USA in rebounds per game at 34.7. Emerald Ekpiteta leads with 6.7 boards per contest. She is third in scoring with 8.6 points per game. Tanajah Hayes has 41 assists (2.9 per game) and 37 steals. Hayes ranks 35th in the NCAA in steals per game (2.64) and 48th in total steals. The Panthers rank 20th in the nation and third in the league in turnovers forced per game at 21.50.
Jesyka Burks-Wiley is in her second season at the helm at FIU and has a record of 24-18. She led the Panthers into the 2021 WBI, and defeated Manhattan, 59-58, on two last-second free throws to win the consolation game. Burks-Wiley has been an assistant coach at USF (2017-20), Boston College (2016-17), Brown (2014-16), UMass-Lowell (2013-14), and Nebraska-Omaha (2012-13). In her playing days, Burks-Wiley is one of eight players in Boston University history to record 1,000 points (1,315) and 500 rebounds (623). She was named the 2009 America East Player of the Year.
