BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Marshall University men's basketball team (7-12, 0-6 C-USA) fell to the Florida Atlantic Owls (11-8, 4-2 C-USA), 71-60, on Saturday afternoon in Boca Raton, Florida.
"I don't know what it is, but I can't ask them to play any harder," Marshall men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the loss.
Junior Taevion Kinsey reached the 20-point plateau with 21 against the Owls. The Columbus, Ohio, native also snagged a game-high seven rebounds in the loss.
Senior Darius George had 12 points as he went 5-for-7 from the field.
The Owls had four student-athletes reach double-figure scoring, led by a team-high 14 by Alijah Martin. He also grabbed seven boards.
FAU led for the first 15 minutes of the game, but the Herd battled and never trailed by more than seven points during that stretch.
However, the Herd took its first lead off an 8-2 run that stretched from 8:02 to 5:00. Kinsey started it with a pair of free throws, followed with a layup by George. Kinsey then added a lay-in and George closed it with a dunk to give MU a 23-22 advantage.
The Owls outscored Marshall 9-7 down the stretch as the visitors trailed 31-30 at halftime.
FAU recorded the first three points of the second half, but a dunk by freshman Obinna Anochili-Killen and a jumper by David Early knotted the game, 34-34, at the 18:18 mark.
Unfortunately, a pair of 7-0 runs by Florida Atlantic in the final 14 minutes of the contest were too much for the Herd to overcome as it fell in the Sunshine State.
NOTES
Kinsey reached his 53rd consecutive outing in double-figure scoring. The Columbus, Ohio native notched his 14th game of 20 points this season.
The Herd made a three in its 989th consecutive game, with the last contest without a triple occurring on Feb. 27, 1989, in a win over App State.
George played in his 130th career game, tying C.J. Burks (2015-19) for third-most in program history.
Kinsey has 1,739 points in his career and passed George Stone (1965-68) for 10th-most points in program history. Stone tallied 1,723 points in his Marshall career.
