Herd Men’s Basketball Suffers Defeat to Blue Raiders

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University men's basketball team (7-13, 0-7 C-USA) fell to the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (13-6, 4-2 C-USA), 81-79, on Thursday night in the Cam Henderson Center. 
   
"All of our shooting stats were way up, that's where they need to be. We should've had that one," Marshall men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the loss.
 
Redshirt sophomore Andrew Taylor lead all student-athletes with 22 points. The guard made eight of his 14 field-goal attempts, including 4-for-6 from three-point range, to go with seven rebounds.
 
Junior Taevion Kinsey tallied 18 points and a game-high five assists in the loss.
 
Senior Mikel Beyers scored 12 points in 24 minutes of action. Freshman Obinna Anochili-Killen grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and had nine points.
 
Camryn Weston led the Blue Raiders with 19 points off the bench.
 
The Herd started the game by making three of its first four attempts from the behind the arc. Taylor, Anochili-Killen and sophomore Goran Miladinovic hit the deep balls to give MU a 9-5 lead just over three minutes into the contest.
 
After a Middle Tennessee jumper, the Herd went on a 4-0 streak to go up by six, 13-7, at the 15:51 mark.
 
The two sides traded points for the next seven minutes before Donovan Sims concluded a 7-0 Blue Raiders advantage with a triple to tie the game, 22-22, with just over eight minutes left in the opening stanza.
 
Marshall used three runs of four or more points, including a 6-0 streak, in the final eight minutes to lead 40-37 at the break. It shot 51.9 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes.
 
The Herd opened the second half by scoring seven of the first 10 points and led 47-40 at the 16:31 mark. However, the visitors tallied the next eight points to take a 48-47 advantage just over a minute later.
 
After three lead changes and three ties, Marshall held a 79-75 lead with 1:04 on the clock after a pair of Kinsey free throws, but MTSU scored the final six points of the ballgame as the Herd suffered the loss.
 
NOTES             
Kinsey reached his 54th consecutive outing in double-figure scoring.
        
The Herd made a three in its 990th consecutive game, with the last contest without a triple occurring on Feb. 27, 1989, in a win over App State.   
 
Marshall made 10 threes in the loss, the first time it made double-digit long balls since Dec. 1 at Akron.
 
Taylor collected his third game of 20 or more points this season as Beyers reached double-figure scoring for the third time this season.
